BULLETIN 14 November 8 am
Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Over 150 Palestinian refugees were stranded at OR Tambo Airport for over 12 hours
# The EFF opens a case of perjury against minister Mchunu’s chief of staff, Cedrick Nkabinde
# And the BBC apologises to Trump, but rejects his demands for compensation
# The Border Management Authority says the 153 Palestinians who travelled to South Africa as asylum seekers are eligible for 90-day visa-exempt travel to the country. The refugees were stuck at OR Tambo International Airport for 12 hours yesterday after they were initially denied entry for not having the customary departure stamps in their passports. They disembarked the plane after the Gift of the Givers gave its commitment to accommodate the travellers. BMA’s Mmemme Mogotsi says 23 of the 153 travellers have left the country already:
# The EFF has opened a case of perjury against Police minister Senzo Mchunu’s chief of staff, Cedric Nkabinde. This follows his appearance before Parliament’s ad hoc committee this week, where it emerged that parts of his statement were fabricated. He has been accused of lying about his relationship with controversial businessman Brown Mokgotsi. EFF deputy secretary-general, Leigh-Ann Mathys, says Nkabinde deliberately lied to Parliament, misrepresented facts, and admitted that he thumb-sucked his affidavit:
# Statistics South Africa says mining production rose by 1.2-percent in September compared with the same month last year. The biggest contributors were platinum, gold, and coal, while manganese and iron ore declined. Compared with August, production was 2.2-percent higher. Stats SA’s Juan-Pierre Terblanche says sales were 8.2-percent higher than in August:
# The BBC has apologised to US president Donald Trump over the editing of a speech in a Panorama programme in 2024, which led to the resignation of its director general, Tim Davie, and news chief, Deborah Turness. The programme had misleadingly edited a speech by Trump to make it appear that he had directly called for violence on Capitol Hill in January 2021. The BCC says while it sincerely regrets the manner in which the speech was edited, it strongly disagrees that there is a basis for a defamation claim.
# Tennis: Twenty-two-year-old Carlos Alcaraz has clinched the year-end world number one ranking for the second time in his career. The Spaniard secured the prestigious honour after defeating Italian Lorenzo Musetti, 6-4, 6-1, to finish top of the Jimmy Connors at the ATP Finals in Turin, and make the semifinals. Australian Alex de Minaur stunned American Taylor Fritz, 7-6, 6-3, to progress to the semifinals. Alcaraz says securing the year-end number one ranking means everything to him:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand and the euro at 19-rand-78-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-36-cents and Bitcoin trades at 99-thousand-265-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-209-dollars-7-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 63-dollars-85-cents a barrel.
