# And Table Mountain hosts Heritage Braai Day for World Tourism Day today
# Public Works and Infrastructure minister Dean Macpherson says a newly completed prison will house corrupt officials and politicians after the 2026 local government elections. He singled out municipalities such as Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg, and Nelson Mandela Bay as examples where graft has thrived. Macpherson stressed that the facility signals government’s commitment to rooting out corruption and ensuring accountability, saying it is time for the corrupt to face justice:
# Defend Our Democracy has condemned reports that the Standing Committee on Public Accounts chairperson, Songezo Zibi, is under surveillance and facing intimidation linked to Parliament’s Road Accident Fund inquiry. Spokesperson Naledi Kuali says such acts undermine Parliament’s constitutional oversight role and endanger whistleblowers exposing Road Accident Fund corruption. She demands that Parliament and political parties act decisively to protect witnesses and ensure accountability:
# UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer told a global conference of centre-left leaders that they must tackle uncontrolled migration and confront “lies” being told about their countries by hard-right politicians. The meeting in London included Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Canadian premier Mark Carney and comes as right-wing populism rises around the world and with Republican Donald Trump back in the White House. Starmer says it is now time for social democrats to confront directly some of the challenges and lies that have taken root in their societies.
# Sports news:
# Soccer: Liverpool, flawless in their Premier League title defence so far this season, will face a serious test when they visit unbeaten Crystal Palace today. Liverpool have got off to a flying start with seven straight wins in all competitions, but the Premier League leaders will be tested at Selhurst Park. Liverpool, bolstered by their knack for scoring late winners, has marched five points clear after reeling off five successive league victories. Meanwhile, the Manchester United boss, Ruben Amorim, is in desperate need of a win when his side travels to struggling Brentford today.
# And rugby: Despite the Bulls being ravaged by injuries, coach Johan Ackermann has still been able to name six Springboks in his starting-15 for today’s United Rugby Championship match against the Ospreys at Loftus. This will be the first test of Ackermann’s coaching regime since being installed in the position two months ago. Among the most significant selections are returning Springbok Gerhard Steenekamp, back from injury, Junior Springboks JJ Theron and Cheswill Jooste, and captain Marcell Coetzee. Willie le Roux has been named on the bench. Kick-off is at 2 pm.
# And finally: Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company invites South Africans to celebrate World Tourism Day at the Heritage Braai Day today from 11 am to 5 pm. Originally scheduled for Heritage Day, the event was postponed due to the weather. Visitors can enjoy food, prizes, and activities at the Top Station, including boerewors rolls, beers, fun challenges, and spot prizes.
