# South Africa criticises Russia for its indiscriminate airstrike on civilians in Ukraine
# The conservative activist and Trump ally, Charlie Kirk, is shot dead in Utah
# And cricket: South Africa beat England in the T20 series opener
# The South African government has expressed concern about the indiscriminate attacks on civilians emanating from a Russian attack, which killed pensioners in the village of Yarova, in Eastern Ukraine. The Russian airstrike on Yarova in the Donetsk province killed 24 people and injured 19. Department of International Relations and Cooperation’s spokesperson, Chrispin Phiri, says the deliberate targeting of non-combatants is a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and human rights laws and principles:
# The United African Transformation says the ongoing National Macro Organisation of Government process is threatening rural development programmes. The transformation warns that over 200 officials from the Directorate of Co-operatives and Enterprise Development are being forced into agricultural roles they are not trained for, putting the success of land reform initiatives at risk. Party leader Wonder Mahlatsi urges the Land Reform and Rural Development Ministry to halt the transfers, protecting staff expertise and safeguarding rural communities:
# Parliament’s portfolio committee on Higher Education has welcomed minister of Higher Education, Buti Manamela’s swift intervention at the College of Cape Town. The minister has established a task team to investigate the governance crisis at the college, including allegations of unfair labour practices, abuse of power, misconduct, and wasteful and irregular expenditure. The committee says ongoing instability at the institution cannot be allowed to compromise the academic success of students. It has called for urgent steps to restore stability, good governance, and accountability at the college.
# Conservative political activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA, Charlie Kirk, was killed after being shot at an event at Utah Valley University. The 31-year-old, who was also a close ally of president Donald Trump, was known for holding outdoor debates on campuses across America, including on transgender identity, climate change, faith and family values. Trump says this is a dark moment for America, as Kirk was a martyr for truth and freedom:
# Cricket: South Africa beat England by 14 runs in the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method in their rain-affected clash in Cardiff, to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20 series. Persistent downpours delayed the start of the game by over two hours, leaving only a nine-overs-a-side contest possible. Aiden Markram scored 28 as the Proteas powered to 97 for five in 7.5 overs before another rain disruption. England’s target was revised to 69 in five overs. Corbin Bosch and Marco Jansen took two wickets as the hosts finished on 54 for five.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-48-cents and the euro at 20-rand-45-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-64-cents and Bitcoin trades at 114-thousand-142-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-633-dollars-15-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 67-dollars-22-cents a barrel.
