# AfriForum says despite Ramaphosa’s gimmicks, the NHI is still unconstitutional
# Putin will not travel to the BRICS summit in Brazil, fearing arrest
# And soccer: Mamelodi Sundowns are knocked out of the Club World Cup
# AfriForum says there is no connection between the quality of the Nuclear Medicine Research Infrastructure facility and the constitutionality or workability of the National Health Insurance system. During his visit to the research facility at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria on Tuesday, president Cyril Ramaphosa hailed the facility as a blueprint for NHI. AfriForum’s Louis Boshoff says this brilliant research facility does not make NHI constitutional or fundable:
# Parliament’s select committee on Economic Development and Trade is calling on the Department of Employment and Labour to give careful thought to what it aims to achieve through the review of the country’s labour legislation. The department intends to review and amend approximately six pieces of labour legislation, a process that has already commenced at the Cabinet level. The committee says that the review of labour legislation must take into account the country’s stagnant economy and soaring unemployment rate.
# The DA in the Tshwane Metro has retained Ward 56 following a by-election yesterday. The ward, including Hatfield, Brooklyn, Hillcrest, and New Muckleneuk, became vacant after DA councillor Jarad Frimmel resigned in April. The party’s vote share in the ward grew from 50.05-percent in the 2024 election to 80-percent in this by-election. The DA’s Cilliers Brink says it is clear that the current ANC-EFF-ActionSA coalition leaves little hope for the people of Tshwane:
# Russian president Vladimir Putin will not travel to Brazil for next month’s BRICS summit due to the outstanding International Criminal Court arrest warrant on the Russian president. Putin is wanted by The Hague-based ICC for the alleged illegal deportation of Ukrainian children since he ordered his troops into the country in 2022. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters Putin would participate in the 6 to 7 July BRICS heads of state summit in Rio de Janeiro via video link.
# Soccer: Mamelodi Sundowns have been eliminated from the FIFA Club World Cup after playing to a goalless draw with Fluminense in Miami Gardens, Florida. The South African league champions needed a win to progress to the last 16. Sundowns finished third in Group F with four points, just one behind Fluminense, who advanced alongside Borussia Dortmund to the last 16. Sundowns coach, Miguel Cardoso, says his players can return to South Africa with their heads held high:
