# Health minister Aaron Motsoaledi is set to deliver the keynote address at the opening session of the 4th G20 Health Working Group meeting in Gauteng today. Delegates will examine opportunities for technology transfer, sustainable financing, and regulatory alignment to ensure equitable access to lifesaving tools during health emergencies. The department’s spokesperson, Foster Mohale, says this meeting is occurring at a critical time for global health as the world is confronting overlapping challenges such as the potential for future pandemics and climate change:
# Agriculture minister John Steenhuisen says persistent regulatory delays, inconsistent enforcement, and non-tariff barriers continue to hinder South Africa’s export growth. He addressed the inaugural Total Mixed Ration Conference on Monday. The minister says the country’s export certification processes are often too slow, and engagements on market access can be fragmented. Steenhuisen says his department is prioritising trade negotiations that open new markets, especially for beef and lamb, and is accelerating work to meet the standards of key regions, including the Gulf States, the European Union, and East Asia.
# A 12-year-old boy charged with culpable homicide after driving over a 14-year-old boy in Brakpan in Gauteng will return to court on 28 August. Following his court appearance yesterday, the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court will assess whether the minor can be held criminally responsible. National Prosecuting Authority’s Lumka Mahanjana says the boy has been released into his parents’ care:
# The Pentagon has confirmed that it is activating 700 active-duty US Marines to the Los Angeles area to help the federal response to protests against immigration raids and deportations. It says the Marines will seamlessly integrate with around two-thousand-100 National Guard troops already on the ground, protecting federal personnel and property. LA mayor Karen Bass says the city is being used for an experiment by the federal government:
# Athletics: South Africa’s Marione Fourie finished second behind Nadine Visser of the Netherlands in the women’s 100-metre hurdles at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting in Hengelo, Netherlands. Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska finished third. In the men’s 100-metres, the Netherlands’ Elvis Afrifa secured victory with South Africa’s Benjamin Richardson second and Sweden’s Henrik Larsson. Uganda’s Tokyo Olympic gold medallist Peruth Chemutai cruised to a dominant win in the women’s 3000-metre steeplechase.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-72-cents and the euro at 20-rand-20-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-99-cents and Bitcoin trades at 109-thousand-50-dollars.
