# Acting Police minister, Firoz Cachalia, has praised law enforcement agencies for maintaining peace and public order during nationwide protests against undocumented foreign nationals on Tuesday. The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration provided an update on the demonstrations and the government’s comprehensive management of migration in Pretoria yesterday evening. Cachalia says at least 361 undocumented immigrants were arrested, eleven for looting or attempted looting, four for drug-related offences, and 291 for common law crimes:
Meanwhile, minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, says the South African National Defence Force was deployed to Durban in KwaZulu-Natal and in Johannesburg, Gauteng, overnight, in the aftermath of the anti-illegal immigration protests. Police arrested three suspects in Hillbrow after they allegedly opened fire on a splinter group of protesters. In Durban, police contained small and sporadic incidents of looting. Ntshavheni says the SANDF deployment was to increase safety and security measures, as well as provide reinforcement for the police:
# The ANC has welcomed the changes president Cyril Ramaphosa has made to his cabinet, saying the appointment of ministers and deputy ministers is a constitutional prerogative of the president. Ramaphosa largely implemented changes requested by the DA. These will affect the ministries of Agriculture; Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment; Trade, Industry, and Competition; Electricity and Energy; Higher Education; and Water and Sanitation. The ANC says it welcomes the appointment of Dina Pule as minister of Social Development and is confident that she will discharge her duties well.
# US president Donald Trump has urged Congress to take action to restrict birthright citizenship. This follows the Supreme Court ruling, which stated that his administration could not use an executive order to end birthright citizenship for babies born on American soil. Trump wants lawmakers to create new legislation that establishes exceptions to birthright citizenship for children born to parents who do not have permanent legal status in the US. Meanwhile, vice president JD Vance told Fox News that the court’s ruling is disappointing:
