# The Solidarity Research Institute criticises the Employment Equity Amendment Act
# And soccer: Pyramids beat Mamelodi Sundowns to win the CAF Champions League trophy
# The ANC has condemned the killing of IFP deputy chief whip, Khethamabala Petros Sithole, calling for law enforcement to bring the perpetrators to justice. He was gunned down in Katlehong on Gauteng’s East Rand on Saturday night. Sithole served on the Parliamentary portfolio committee on Communications and Digital Technologies. ANC’s spokesperson, Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri, says Sithole’s killing has robbed the nation of a principled leader, a unifier, and a true patriot:
# Solidarity Research Institute says its analysis shows that 111-thousand women and 70-thousand white men could lose their jobs due to the employment equity targets. The Employment Equity Amendment Act took effect on January 1st. The Act empowers the Employment and Labour minister to set numerical targets for equitable representation of suitably qualified individuals from designated groups at all occupational levels. SRI head Connie Mulder says these sectoral targets and strict central regulation of labour in South Africa are blatant discrimination against minorities or groups.
# Fezile Ngubane, who was initially named as one of the three suspects in the murder of Olorato Mongale, says he has never been involved in crime. The 30-year-old Mongale was found dead a week ago after she was reported missing following a date in Johannesburg. One suspect linked to her murder, Philangenkosi Makhanya, was killed during a shootout with police in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday. Ngubane, who was cleared following an investigation, says the whole ordeal has left him shaken:
# Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky says they are doing everything possible to make Russia feel the need to end this war. This comes after Kyiv carried out large-scale drone strikes against several airbases deep inside Moscow on Sunday, destroying multiple combat planes. Among the more than 40 aircraft reportedly hit were Tu-95 and Tu-22 strategic bombers, which Russia uses to fire long-range missiles at Ukrainian cities. Zelensky called this operation a brilliant success, adding that Ukraine will rightly continue defending itself.
# Soccer: Pyramids have been crowned African champions for the first time after beating Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in the CAF Champions League final second leg, for a 3-2 aggregate victory in Cairo. Goals from Fiston Mayele and Ahmed Samy saw Pyramids join Al Ahly, Zamalek, and Ismaily as the only Egyptian sides to win the CAF Champions League. They are also the first maiden competition winners since Sundowns in 2016. Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso says he is disappointed:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-97-cents and the euro at 20-rand-41-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-22-cents and Bitcoin trades at 104-thousand-908-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-304-dollars-88-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 63-dollars-94-cents a barrel.
