# The Safer South Africa Foundation has raised alarm over the rise in social crimes, including gender-based violence, at educational institutions nationwide. Between October and December 2024, 11 murders and 99 rapes were reported at schools, creches, and universities. Spokesperson Godfrey Monene says the foundation condemns the recent rape of Cwecwe in Matatiele, urging stronger preventative measures, active citizenship, and swift justice. He confirmed that over 600-thousand have signed a petition demanding accountability and safety in schools.

# Celebrity doctor and former TV host Mehmet Oz has been confirmed by the US Senate to run the Centres for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the agency that oversees the healthcare of millions of Americans. The 64-year-old, whose approach to weight-loss drugs and miracle cures have come under scrutiny, trained as a surgeon before appearing on The Oprah Winfrey Show in the early 2000s. After picking Oz, who has never held public office, Trump said there may be no physician more qualified and capable to make America healthy again.
# Soccer: Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne confirmed that he will leave the club at the end of the season. The 33-year old has won 14 major trophies since joining City from Wolfsburg in 2015, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2023. De Bruyne said in a post on social media that “nothing about this is easy to write, but as football players, we all know this day eventually comes”. He was twice crowned players’ player of the year.
