In this bulletin:
# The FF Plus says the Kill the Boer song will always be hate speech
# Over 700 suspects are arrested in a nationwide operation
# And Donald Trump announces a 25-percent tariff on all imported cars
# The Freedom Front Plus says it strongly condemns the singing of the so-called struggle song, Kill the Boer, and shares the public’s frustration with the Human Rights Commission and the government’s silence on the matter. In 2022, the Equality Court ruled that the anti-apartheid chant couldn’t be considered hate speech, a ruling upheld by the Supreme Court of Appeal in 2024. FF Plus leader, Corne Mulder, says a song like this has no place in South Africa:
# Nationwide Vala Umgodi operations led to the arrest of 792 suspects in the past two weeks. Some were nabbed for illegal-mining-related crimes, murder, attempted murder, and the possession of explosives and suspected stolen goods. Police spokesperson, Amanda van Wyk, says since its inception in December 2023, operation Vala Umgodi has resulted in the arrest of more than 20-thousand suspects:
# Build One South Africa will lead a picket outside the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Gauteng as president Cyril Ramaphosa addresses the National Water and Sanitation Indaba today. The party demands urgent action on the water crisis. BOSA board chairperson, Stevens Mokgalapa, calls for solutions instead of summits. The picket follows BOSA’s legal action to address water-shedding in hospitals and schools and broader governance failures that have led to the collapse of water infrastructure across the country.
# US president Donald Trump has announced a new 25-percent tariff on all imported cars and car parts entering America. The tariffs, set to take effect next Thursday, aim to expand America’s auto manufacturing prowess. The US imported roughly eight-million cars last year, with Mexico as the top foreign supplier of cars, followed by South Korea, Japan, Canada, and Germany. Trump says this measure will lead to tremendous growth for the car industry, promising it would spur jobs and investment in the US:
# Cricket: South Africa’s Quinton de Kock scored an unbeaten 97 to guide defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders to an eight-wicket victory over the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati. Spinners Moeen Ali and Varun Chakravarthy combined to help restrict Rajasthan to 151 for nine. In reply, De Kock and impact substitute Angkrish Raghuvanshi shared an unbeaten 83-run partnership off 44 balls, as KKR reached the target with 15 balls to spare. Today the Sunrisers Hyderabad take on the Lucknow Super Giants.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-20-cents and the euro at 19-rand-61-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-50-cents and Bitcoin trades at 87-thousand-463-dollars.
