Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The DA cautiously welcomes the commission of inquiry
# The GOOD Party says South Africa does not have the time for another costly commission
# And an Israeli airstrike kills ten people, including children, at a Gaza water station
# DA leader John Steenhuisen says while they welcome Police minister Senzo Mchunu being placed on special leave as a necessary step, it comes after a national outcry. President Cyril Ramaphosa has also established a judicial commission of inquiry to investigate allegations relating to the infiltration of law enforcement, intelligence, and associated institutions within the criminal justice system by criminal syndicates. Steenhuisen says they will not accept a years-long process that gathers damning evidence only to deliver zero accountability:
Meanwhile the GOOD Party says that while the appointment of a commission of inquiry to probe allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, is well-intentioned, it is too slow and costly. GOOD’s secretary general, Brett Herron, says a commission of inquiry cannot replace a criminal investigation:
# The Eastern Cape High Court in Gqeberha is today set to hear the first part of the appeals process by the state of the acquittal of televangelist pastor Timothy Omotoso and his two co-accused. This follows a directive by judge Irma Schoeman after the state sent a request for clarification of factual findings in her judgment. The three were acquitted in April on charges including human trafficking and rape. Omotoso was deported from South Africa to Nigeria in May.
# Ten Palestinians, including six children, were killed in a missile strike at a water collection point in central Gaza on Sunday. Sixteen people were injured. The Israel Defence Forces says it had intended to hit an Islamic Jihad militant, but a technical error caused the missile to fall dozens of metres from the target. It says this incident is under review, adding that it works to mitigate harm to uninvolved civilians as much as possible. Meanwhile, a separate airstrike on Sunday hit a home, killing nine people.
# Soccer: Chelsea stunned Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 to win the FIFA Club World Cup at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. England forward Cole Palmer scored twice and created a third for new signing João Pedro, as Chelsea earned the title of world champions following their UEFA Conference League win earlier this year. Palmer, who was named the best player of the tournament, says they proved their doubters wrong:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-94-cents and the euro at 20-rand-95-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-18-cents and Bitcoin trades at 119-thousand-888-dollars.
