# Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Gwede Mantashe, is set to deliver the keynote address at the Invest in African Mining Indaba in Cape Town today, on behalf of president Cyril Ramaphosa. The event is the world’s largest gathering of mining’s most influential stakeholders and decision-makers vested in African mining. This year’s theme is Future-proofing African Mining Today. Discussions are expected to focus on technological advancements, inclusive growth, and the importance of sustainability.
# The General Industries Workers Union of South Africa has welcomed the arrests of four police officers accused of assisting alleged Stilfontein illegal mining kingpin, Neo Tshoaeli, in the North West. He escaped after emerging from underground with over 240 others during a government-led operation. National Police Commissioner, Fannie Masemola, has confirmed that the officers have been removed from the Vala Mgodi operation and internal departmental proceedings are underway. Giwusa president, Mametlwe Sebei, says they don’t believe Tshoaeli is the real kingpin:
# The Freedom Front Plus says it will fulfil its coalition obligations in the Swellendam Municipality in the Western Cape, but remains committed to clean governance, regardless of who governs. This comes after FF Plus councillor, Juan van Schalkwyk, voted in support of a motion of no confidence in the former DA mayor, Francois du Randt. FF Plus’, Wouter Wessels, says the party’s Federal Management Committee has decided to vote for a DA candidate in the upcoming council meeting, per the coalition agreement:
# Mexico, Canada, and China have announced retaliatory tariffs against the US. This comes after president Donald Trump said a tax of 25-percent on Canadian and Mexican imports and an additional ten-percent tax on Chinese goods will come into force on Tuesday. Canada and Mexico have both announced retaliatory tariffs of 25-percent on US goods. China says it will file a lawsuit with the World Trade Organisation. Canadian prime minister candidate, Chrystia Freeland, says the country is determined to stand up for itself:
# Netball: South Africa narrowly defeated hosts England 61-59 at the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham on Sunday evening, to remain the only unbeaten side in the Nations Cup. The two teams were level at the end of the first three quarters only for South Africa, ranked fifth, to pull away in the final 15 minutes and ultimately beat fourth-ranked England. South Africa won their opening match 75-40 against Uganda. England will face Uganda, while South Africa will take on Malawi in the final group fixtures on Saturday.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 19-rand and the euro at 19-rand-41-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-28-cents and Bitcoin trades at 94-thousand-326-dollars. Gold sells at two-thousand-775-dollars-21-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 76-dollars a barrel.
