# The DA Women’s Network in the Eastern Cape is outraged that girls as young as 10 are being robbed of their childhood and forced to endure the trauma of giving birth. The network is calling on government to ramp up awareness campaigns for girls and parents. Chairperson Nomvano Zibonda says government must enforce harsher penalties for perpetrators, ensure timely justice, and guarantee safeguarding measures to prevent child abuse:
# The Weather Service warns of widespread showers and thundershowers across the central and eastern regions of South Africa from tomorrow until well into the week. This includes North West, the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and the southern parts of Mpumalanga and Gauteng. Forecaster Samkelisiwe Thwala has warned motorists returning home after the holidays that low-water bridges may overflow, creating strong currents that could sweep away vehicles, posing a risk of loss of life and property:
# The Foreign ministers of Germany and France are in Damascus to promote a new political beginning between Europe and Syria. It is the first official visit to the country by top diplomats from European Union member states since the fall of Bashar al-Assad. Germany’s Annalena Baerbock called for all people, regardless of ethnic or religious background, to have a place in Syria’s political process. French Foreign minister Jean-Noël Barrot yesterday met with Christian religious leaders in Damascus.
# Cricket: Ryan Rickelton registered his highest test score as South Africa ended the first day of the second Test against Pakistan at Newlands in Cape Town on 316 for four. Rickelton and captain Temba Bavuma registered the highest fourth wicket stand ever at Newlands. The 235-run partnership between them was the main highlight for the Proteas after Bavuma had won the toss and elected to bat first. Bavuma hit nine boundaries and two sixes before losing his wicket on 106. Rickelton, on 176 and David Bedingham, on 4 will resume play for the Proteas this morning.
# And finally: Cape Town’s Tweede Nuwe Jaar Parade is set to draw 80-thousand to 100-thousand spectators today. Over 20-thousand performers from 18 minstrel troupes will march from District Six to Bo-Kaap, showcasing vibrant costumes and live performances. City officials highlight the event’s cultural significance and commitment to family-friendly celebrations. Motorists have been warned of extensive road closures in the CBD, including Adderley and Darling Streets.
