# RISE Mzansi says South Africans are still not safe despite the rate of both murder and rape decreasing in the second quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year. Murder decreased by 5.8-percent, rape by 3.1-percent, and robbery with aggravating circumstances by 8.8-percent. However, there have been increases in attempted murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and commercial crime areas. Meanwhile, the GOOD Party says the latest crime statistics highlight the shocking state of violence experienced by women and children in the country. Between July and the end of September this year, murders against women saw an 8.6-percent increase, with a 3.5-percent increase in attempted murder. There was a 7.5-percent increase in the murder of children. GOOD’s secretary-general, Brett Herron, says on average, ten women and three children are killed daily across South Africa:
# Police in North West have vowed to arrest illegal miners once they emerge from the disused Stilfontein mine, following the ongoing rescue operation. Deputy provincial Police Commissioner, Patrick Asaneng, says authorities will not negotiate with the Zama Zamas as their focus is on tackling criminality in the region. Asaneng reaffirmed the police’s commitment to ensuring the safety of both law enforcement officers and those involved in the illegal mining activities:
# US Special Counsel Jack Smith asked a judge to dismiss two federal criminal cases against president-elect Donald Trump, citing a Justice Department policy that bans the prosecution of a sitting president. The charges against Trump were for trying to overturn the 2020 election and for improperly storing classified documents dismissed. Judge Tanya Chutkan accepted Smith’s request, dismissing the case without prejudice, meaning the charges could be refiled after Trump finishes his second term.
# Motorsport: Formula One has reached an agreement in principle with US car giant General Motors for its Cadillac brand to join the grid as the eleventh team from 2026. F1 has three races in America each season. General Motors president Mark Reuss says they are committed to competing with passion and integrity to elevate the sport for race fans worldwide. GM’s entry will raise the number of car manufacturers building engines for F1 to six, in addition to Mercedes, Ferrari, Ford, Honda, and Audi.
