# Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni says the cabinet has not approved the withdrawal of the SABC Bill from Parliament. Communications and Digital Technologies minister Solly Malatsi withdrew the bill, arguing that the legislation does not serve the long-term interests of the public broadcaster or the South African public. Ntshavheni says the minister has no power to withdraw the bill after the cabinet approves it:
# The EFF says it has long identified South African Football Association president Danny Jordaan as a corrupt ANC-deployee in the association. Jordaan and two others have been charged with fraud and theft involving the misuse of about 1.3-million-rand. The EFF is calling for a thorough and independent probe into the finances of SAFA during the tenure of Jordaan. It says there must be a specific focus on where the association’s finances have been directed, including procurement and payments of service providers which are most likely linked to the ANC.
# Metalworkers union Numsa will go on strike at ArcelorMittal South Africa in Vanderbijlpark today. This after the company dismissed over 100 workers ahead of the festive season. The union’s spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola accuses management of refusing to explore alternatives like severance packages or redeployment, leaving many workers in hardship:
# US president-elect Donald Trump has nominated controversial congressman Matt Gaetz as his pick for attorney general. Late on Wednesday evening, Gaetz resigned from Congress, ending the inquiry by the House ethics committee over allegations of financial impropriety and sexual misconduct against him. He has denied the allegations. Democratic Party senator, Chris Murphy, told CNN that Gaetz’s nomination as attorney general is a red alert moment for American democracy:
# Tennis: Four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz claimed his first win in the ATP Finals in Turin, Italy. The Spaniard overcame illness to beat Russia’s Andrey Rublev, 6-3, 7-6, in the John Newcombe Group, as he chases a semifinal spot for the second consecutive year. Meanwhile, Germany’s Alexander Zverev took a huge step towards a semifinal spot with a, 7-6, 6-3, win over Norwegian Casper Ruud. Zverev is chasing his third ATP Finals title, having previously lifted the trophy in 2018 and 2021.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-26-cents and the euro at 19-rand-27-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-17-cents and Bitcoin trades at 89-thousand-898-dollars-1-cent. Gold sells at two-thousand-562-dollars-92-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 72-dollars-6-cents a barrel.
