# South Africa expresses concern over Trump’s impact on climate talks
# And, rugby: A former league star makes his debut for the Wallabies against England today
# The South African Local Government Association in KwaZulu-Natal has urgently convened with municipal environmental health practitioners to address escalating food poisoning cases impacting learners. This comes as hundreds of learners have been affected by food poisoning. In an interview with the SABC, SALGA’s KZN director, Sabelo Gwala, expressed his concerns over system failures and rising criminal activity, calling for decisive measures to prevent further fatalities from food contamination:
In Gauteng, 21 learners from Vuyani Primary School in Tsakane have been discharged after hospitalisation for symptoms of a suspected foodborne illness. The learners were treated at various healthcare facilities. This comes after over 100 pupils from Tamaho Primary School in Katlehong were also treated at various clinics and hospitals for a suspected foodborne illness on Wednesday. The provincial Education Department spokesperson Steve Mabona says the cause is still unknown:
Meanwhile, Ekurhuleni’s Development Planning mayoral committee member, Nomadlozi Nkosi, has warned that non-compliant spaza and tuck shops will face shutdowns. With recent food poisoning cases linked to these shops, she urges operators to present business permits, zoning, and health certificates. In a statement, Nkosi announced a public education campaign and vetting process starting next week, to safeguard community health. The city’s crackdown, supported by SAPS and Environmental Health, also targets wholesalers to prevent expired and counterfeit goods from reaching residents.
# The Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries Dion George has expressed worry about Donald Trump’s U.S. election win potentially disrupting COP29 climate talks. George told Reuters that Trump’s skepticism of climate change could undermine rich nations’ support, affecting developing countries’ climate goals. George says South Africa is concerned about the U.S because of the unknown approach COP29. He says that despite Berlin’s coalition crisis, Germany reassured South Africa that Europe would uphold its commitments.
# And, rugby: Former rugby league star Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii will make his debut for the Wallabies in this afternoon’s Test against England at Twickenham in London. This will be the 21-year-old’s first senior game of rugby union since changing codes less than a month ago. He will start playing Super Rugby for the Waratahs from next year after signing a three-year contract worth 61-million-rand with Rugby Australia. Wallabies head coach Joe Schmidt doesn’t believe Suaalii’s inclusion is a risk, rather describing it as an opportunity.
