# The ANC’s national executive committee Peace and Security subcommittee says it is committed to upholding democratic principles. Speaking at a media briefing, chairperson Polly Boshielo emphasised the party’s stance against corruption by holding individuals accountable. she praised the Special Investigating Unit for recovering stolen public funds and rooting out corruption, stressing that the ANC will not compromise on integrity:
# Four suspects en route to commit a business robbery in Johannesburg were killed in a shootout with Gauteng police on the R59 in Alberton. The road remains closed for investigations, causing significant traffic delays. Provincial Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni says this incident follows another fatal shootout in KwaZulu-Natal, where two wanted suspects were killed:
# Sun International’s plan to acquire Peermont, the owner of Emperors Palace, faced a setback as the Competition Commission recommended blocking the 7.3-billion-rand deal. The company stated it would review the commission’s report before it reaches the Competition Tribunal, which has the final say. The acquisition, aimed at scaling operations, includes Peermont’s 11 properties and online betting platform. Despite the news, Sun’s shares remain stable, gaining 15-percent over the past year.
# The Israeli military says it has conducted “precise strikes” in response to what it called “the continuous attacks from the regime in Iran against Israel”. It is the first time Israel’s military has openly attacked Iran, which has not faced a sustained barrage of fire from a foreign enemy since its 1980s war with Iraq. Following the strikes, the Israeli Defence Force stated its aircraft struck missile manufacturing facilities used to produce the missiles that Iran fired at the State of Israel over the last year.
# And, rugby: The Sharks put their best foot forward when they convincingly beat Munster 41-24 in Durban yesterday in their fifth game of the United Rugby Championships. In an earlier game, the Bulls managed to edge out Benetton by 17-15. The Lions, 4th on the points log, went down to log-leaders Leinster 24-6. The Stormers could not capitalise on their home ground advantage and went down 28-17 to the defending champions Glasgow Warriors in stifling heat in Stellenbosch.
