Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The Police Ministry is to overhaul the criminal justice system
# Strong winds, heavy rain, and cold weather is expected across South Africa
# And, soccer: Ten Hag blames the injury list for Man United’s woes
# Police minister Senzo Mchunu has announced plans to overhaul the criminal justice system, including reforms to the parole system, following concerns about reoffending parolees. This follows the National Prosecuting Authority revealing that a suspect in the Lusikisiki mass murder was on parole for murder. He stressed the need to prevent inmates from coordinating crimes from prison:
# The South African Weather Service has warned that a spring cut-off low will bring severe weather from today till Tuesday. Gale-force winds are expected over the Cape provinces, with strong winds hitting Gauteng, North West, Free State and KwaZulu-Natal. Heavy rain may cause flooding, while coastal regions could see waves up to six metres. Temperatures will drop significantly from tomorrow. The Weather Service has called for caution on major routes.
# The Palestine Solidarity Campaign and other civil rights groups will protest outside the High Court in Cape Town on Monday. They aim to support South Africa’s legal team in presenting their case to the International Court of Justice about alleged genocide against Palestinians by Israel. The campaign’s Dominique Pereira says lawyers and healthcare professionals will call for an end to Israeli apartheid and promote sanctions against the country:
# A former commander of Uganda’s notorious Lord’s Resistance Army has been jailed for 40 years following a landmark war crimes trial. Thomas Kwoyelo was convicted on 44 charges, including murder, rape, kidnapping and pillaging. He denied any involvement. Kwoyelo is the first commander of the feared rebel group to be convicted by a Ugandan court. The resistance army is accused of carrying out atrocities in Uganda and neighbouring countries after being founded in the late 1980s.
# And, soccer: Head coach Erik ten Hag has blamed Manchester United’s lengthy injury list for the wretched run that has left the beleaguered boss fighting to save his job. The Dutchman presided over United’s worst start to a top-flight campaign since 1989/90, though last week’s win against Brentford eased the pressure. United are languishing in 12th place in the Premier League as they head to West Ham tomorrow for a match Ten Hag cannot afford to lose. United have now won just once in their past seven games in all competitions.
