In this bulletin:
# Outa says the government should act on fuel tax cuts
# The Association of Meat Importers and Exporters warns of import delays
# And Hurricane Milton makes landfall near Siesta Key in Florida
# The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse says the government should act and speak less when it comes to cutting fuel levies. Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Gwede Mantashe says discussions between his department and National Treasury on decreasing fuel prices are ongoing. This includes how to reduce fuel taxes that have pushed up prices at the pump to over 20-rand. Outa’s CEO, Wayne Duvenage, says lowering the fuel price does not simply entail scrapping two fuel levies:
# The Association of Meat Importers and Exporters has raised concerns over significant delays in issuing meat import permits, which now take approximately nine days instead of 48 hours. AMIE blames new regulations by the Border Management Agency and urges immediate government intervention to avoid disruptions in the food supply chain. The association says that these delays, particularly at Durban port, are inflating costs and could worsen food inflation, especially for affordable protein products.
# Former Tshwane mayor Cilliers Brink says the DA will work with like-minded parties to prevent the ANC and the EFF from reversing the progress made in the past 18 months. He was ousted through a motion of no confidence last month. ActionSA’s Nasiphi Moya has been elected mayor after garnering 122 votes at a council meeting yesterday, beating Brink, who received 86 votes. Brink says the DA will be an effective opposition in the metro:
# The US National Hurricane Centre says Hurricane Milton has made landfall near Siesta Key, Florida, as a dangerous category three storm. The hurricane is carrying winds of more than 190 kilometres per hour. Milton is the fifth hurricane to make landfall in the US this year. The centre says the storm is expected to slow down considerably as it works its way across, but for now, there are life-threatening storm surge, wind, and flood warnings in place. President Joe Biden says evacuation is now difficult:
# Cricket: India recorded their biggest win at a Women’s T20 World Cup as they thumped Sri Lanka by 82 runs to knock them out of the tournament in Dubai. Opener Smriti Mandhana and captain Harmanpreet Kaur struck half-centuries as India posted 172 for three, the highest team total of the tournament so far. In reply, Sri Lanka was dismissed for 90, joining Scotland as the second team to crash out of the World Cup. India will face defending champions Australia next as they seek to make the semifinals.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-61-cents and the euro at 19-rand-28-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-4-cents and Bitcoin trades at 60-thousand-877-dollars-27-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-615-dollars-4-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 77-dollars-16-cents a barrel.
