# There are calls for the government to embrace the Hospital Association’s proposal for NHI

# The Institute of Race Relations says the government should abandon the National Health Insurance and rather embrace the universal health coverage alternative proposed by the Hospital Association of South Africa. The association’s proposal broadly boils down to mandatory healthcare insurance for all formally employed workers in the country. By making this mandatory, medical scheme coverage would eventually reach 27.5-million people. The IRR’s, John Endres, says NHI as it is currently constituted is unaffordable:
# Parliament portfolio committee Justice and Constitutional Development will receive a briefing on access to the State Capture Commission of Inquiry’s database. According to reports, access to vital state capture evidence has been lost because of a maintenance failure, after the National Prosecuting Authority struggled to take control of the database for more than two years. The database is suspected to hold evidence that could be incriminating for many individuals in the ANC. The committee will be briefed by the minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Thembi Simelane, and the NPA.
# Eskom says crime remains a significant threat affecting not only the reliability of supply and financial stability but also endangering the safety and well-being of its employees and communities. The Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court yesterday sentenced three individuals to an effective six-year imprisonment each, for tampering with essential infrastructure and malicious property damage. Eskom Gauteng spokesperson, Amanda Qithi, says they continually update security measures and collaborate with law enforcement agencies:
# About 40 people have been killed and 60 others wounded after Israeli forces struck a humanitarian zone in Al-Mawasi, southern Gaza. There were more than 200 tents for displaced people in the area. The Israel Defence Forces says it struck significant Hamas terrorists who were operating within a command and control centre embedded inside the humanitarian area. It added that it took steps to mitigate the risk of harming civilians, including using aerial surveillance. Hamas has rejected accusations it exploited civilian areas for military purposes.
# Soccer: Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos says he expects a tough game against hosts South Sudan in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Juba National Stadium this afternoon. South Africa played to a two-all draw with Uganda in the opening match of their campaign at Orlando Stadium in Soweto last Friday. Broos says they will need to rectify the mistakes they made against Uganda if they stand a chance of winning the match:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-88-cents and the euro at 19-rand-74-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-37-cents and Bitcoin trades at 56-thousand-682-dollars-94-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-503-dollars a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 71-dollars-78-cents a barrel.
