# Deputy president Paul Mashatile says while police are trained to protect, they must also be able to defend themselves in situations of violence. He faced questions in the National Assembly yesterday. There has been a surge in incidents where suspects were shot and killed by the police, especially in KwaZulu-Natal. Mashatile says government is reviewing legislation to ensure that police are not restricted from acting in such situations:
# MTN Group says it is investigating allegations of favouritism against CEO Ralph Mupita. The Sunday Times newspaper reported that several executives threatened to quit over Mupita’s leadership style amid accusations of a lack of accountability and favouritism towards a female executive. Africa’s biggest mobile network operator says the board is going through the necessary processes to understand the allegations. Meanwhile, MTN’s top shareholder and Africa’s largest fund manager, the Public Investment Corporation, says corporate governance failures are of serious concern.
# The bail hearing for Durban businessman Thoshan Panday, linked to a 2010 Soccer World Cup corruption scandal, has been postponed to Monday. He appeared yesterday in the Durban Magistrate’s Court in KwaZulu-Natal and is also facing ongoing charges of racketeering, fraud, and corruption in the High Court alongside eight co-accused. The Investigating Directorate’s Henry Mamothame says Panday allegedly controlled entities that received about 47-million-rand from the SAPS through corrupt deals preceding and during the World Cup:
# The father of a 14-year-old boy accused of killing four people at his high school in the US state of Georgia has been arrested. Colt Gray, who killed two students and two teachers with an assault-style rifle at Apalachee High School on Wednesday, has been charged with the four murders. Georgia Bureau of Investigation director, Chris Hosey, says 54-year-old Colin Gray faces four charges of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder, and eight of cruelty to children:
# Cricket: Laura Wolvaardt and Marco Jansen were named women’s and men’s players of the year at the Cricket South Africa Awards held in Johannesburg. Proteas women’s captain Wolvaardt won five awards including ODI player of the year and fans’ player of the year. Reeza Hendricks was named the men’s T20 international player of the year, while Quinton de Kock received the men’s ODI player of the year award. Western Province batter David Bedingham won both the newcomer and Test player of the year awards.
