# Judges Matter says Mandisa Maya has significant challenges
# The Police committee says the killing of police officers is an attack on the state
# And protests broke out in Israel over the government’s handling of the war in Gaza
# Judges Matter says Chief Justice Mandisa Maya has inherited a strong judiciary that can carry out its constitutional function without fear, favour, or prejudice. She has taken over from Raymond Zondo who has retired, making her South Africa’s first women chief justice. She was President of the Supreme Court of Appeal for five years and Zondo’s deputy for the past two years. Speaking to the SABC, Judges Matter’s Mbekezeli Benjamin says the judiciary is still facing significant challenges:
# Parliament’s portfolio committee on Police says the rate at which police officers are killed in the country is unacceptable. A total of 39 police members, three women, and 36 men, lost their lives during the 2023/2024 financial year. Committee chairperson, Ian Cameron, says the killing of officers is a direct attack on the state and perpetrators must be brought to book. He has called for stronger measures, including the removal of illegal firearms from the streets, adding that criminals must be afraid to kill a law enforcement officer.
# The Gauteng Department of Health and Wellness is urging parents to exercise caution following a spike in food poisoning cases among children. This follows the death of two siblings after consuming a meal at home, while others were hospitalised. Spokesperson Motalatale Modiba says that 207 cases have been reported since February, prompting the department to enhance health education in communities:
# Protests have broken out across Israel after the country’s military recovered the bodies of six hostages it said Hamas had killed in Gaza. Twenty-nine people have been arrested in Tel Aviv, where an estimated 100-thousand-people gathered, for vandalism, disorderly conduct, and attacking police officers. Protesters are also blaming Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his handling of the crisis, saying he has not done enough to secure a hostage-ceasefire deal. A US-backed hostages-for-peace deal with Hamas has been on the negotiating table since late May.
# Golf: World number one Scottie Scheffler has won the season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta. The American finished on 30 under par and defeated compatriot Collin Morikawa by four strokes after an eventful round of four-under 67. Scheffler has won seven times on the PGA Tour this year and an Olympic gold medal, becoming the first player since Tiger Woods in 2007 to win seven events in a season. He says he feels like he has lived almost a full lifetime in this year alone:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-86-cents and the euro at 19-rand-75-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-46-cents and Bitcoin trades at 57-thousand-609-dollars-35-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-494-dollars-34-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 76-dollars-26-cents a barrel.
