# ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa says the national executive committee lekgotla has confirmed that the party must proceed without delay and with greater energy with the renewal of the movement. He wrapped up the three-day NEC lekgotla held at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg yesterday. Ramaphosa says through organisational renewal, they need to promote principled, transformative, and emancipatory activism and politics:
# Agricultural union TLU SA says it is encouraged by Agriculture minister John Steenhuisen’s vision for the sector. The minister met with the union and other organisations on Tuesday, where the main challenges in the agricultural industry were discussed. Steenhuisen addressed four key issues that he prioritises including funding for farmers and biosecurity for animals and plants. TLU SA general manager, Bennie van Zyl, says any responsible government should nurture the agricultural sector:
# The South African National Christian Forum has distanced itself from the behaviour of Mboro Motsoeneng, citing they will not support such conduct from any religious leader. This follows after Mboro wielded machetes and rifles, and forcibly took two minor children from Matsediso Primary School in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni. They call for an independent regulatory body for churches to address such misconduct and also disapprove of the burning of Motsoeneng’s church in Katlehong. The forum’s leader Marori Mashashane urges strict measures against such violent responses.
# US vice president and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris says her running mate Tim Walz is a fighter for the middle class and a patriot. She introduced the Minnesota governor at a rally in Philadelphia. Harris formally secured the Democratic nomination yesterday, becoming the first woman of colour to lead a major party ticket. She says Walz is the kind of vice-president America deserves:
# Olympic Games: Algeria’s Imane Khelif beat Thailand’s Janjaem Suwannapheng by unanimous decision in the women’s boxing welterweight semifinal in Paris. She is one of two boxers competing at the Games despite being disqualified from last year’s World Championships by the International Boxing Association after she was reported to have failed gender eligibility tests. Khelif will face Liu Yang of China in the gold medal fight, as she bids to become Algeria’s first boxing gold medallist.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-41-cents and the euro at 20-rand-11-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-41-cents and Bitcoin trades at 56-thousand-678-dollars-45-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-386-dollars-12-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 76-dollars-44-cents a barrel.
