# The ANC backs Ramaphosa’s three strategic priorities
# The Police minister visits Hanover Park and Gqeberha to address crime
# And, rugby: Mapimpi grabs hat-trick in Springboks’ 64-21 victory over Portugal
# The ANC has welcomed the three strategic priorities for South Africa presented by president Cyril Ramaphosa in Parliament. These priorities are driving inclusive growth and job creation, reducing poverty and tackling the high cost of living, and building a capable, ethical, and developmental state. ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula says the priorities will address key challenges faced by South Africans:
# Police minister Senzo Mchunu visited Hanover Park, Cape Town, a high-crime area, to assess safety concerns yesterday. Meeting with stakeholders, Mchunu outlined a new crime-fighting initiative targeting drugs and gang violence in the Western Cape. Residents voiced dissatisfaction with current policing, calling for more effective measures. Mchunu is launching a crime prevention programme in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape today, as part of a broader effort to tackle crime across the country.
# The Gauteng Health Department has advised the identification of Marshalltown fire victims should be directed to SAPS. According to spokesperson Motalatale Modiba the department has received many inquiries about the process. He says the Gauteng Forensic Pathology Services completed postmortems, but DNA processing and analysis are handled by SAPS’s Forensic Science Laboratory and Victim Identification Centre:
# The Bangladeshi government has imposed a nationwide curfew after this week’s clashes between student demonstrators and police claimed at least 105 lives. Military forces have been deployed after police failed to quell days of deadly unrest that has spread throughout the country. The protests initially erupted over quotas that set aside 30-percent of government jobs for the families of those who fought for independence from Pakistan. It has been fuelled by high unemployment among young people, who make up nearly a fifth of a population of 170-million.
# And, rugby: Springbok veteran winger Makazole Mapimpi scored a hat-trick as part of his side’s ten tries against a brave Portugal to win their one-off test 64-21 in Bloemfontein last night. South Africa’s tries came from Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Phepsi Buthelezi, Kurt-Lee Arendse, Ben-Jason Dixon, Lukhanyo Am, Quan Horn, Andre-Hugo Venter, as well as Mapimpi’s hat-trick. Manie Libbok converted two of the tries and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu five. For Portugal, there were two tries by Jose Paiva dos Santos, one by Jose Madeira and conversions by Domingos Cabral and Joris Moura.
