# The South African government is seeking reimbursements from the governments of Malawi, Nigeria and Ethiopia for costs incurred in repatriating their nationals. The Border Management Authority has revealed that 89-thousand-936 people had been repatriated through South Africa’s ports of entry by August 7th. The Department of Home Affairs director-general, Tommy Makhode, says the mass repatriation of undocumented foreign nationals has cost the state almost 293-million-rand, more than five times the department’s annual allocation for deportations:
# The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure says maximum available resources have been deployed to ensure the safety of the 12 Heads of State and Government expected to attend the 46th Ordinary SADC Summit in Durban on 16 and 17 August. Extensive security preparations are already in place at the Durban International Convention Centre, with intelligence structures monitoring the security environment. NATJOINTS chairperson, Tebello Mosikili, says they have already arrested one Zimbabwean foreign national who attempted to obtain accreditation for the summit:
# The DA says the latest Social Research Foundation poll shows its national support has increased to 30-percent, narrowing the gap with the ANC to seven-percentage points ahead of the 4 November local government elections. The poll puts the ANC on 37-percent nationally, with the DA on 30-percent, while in Gauteng the DA leads on 37-percent against the ANC’s 31-percent. The party’s Ashor Sarupen says the poll reflects growing support for the DA’s campaign, which focuses on improving service delivery, infrastructure and job creation.
# Emergency rescue workers are racing to find survivors after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, killing at least 240 people. Almost two-thousand-600 had been injured, and nearly 200 people remain missing. Further tremors were felt in Cali yesterday, one of the worst-affected cities, with more than 70 occurring since Monday. Emergency responders have rescued 37 people from some of the 40 buildings that had completely collapsed in Cali. Colombia’s president, Abelardo de la Espriella, says the top priority is saving as many lives as possible.
# Netball: Cape Town narrowly defeated Tshwane 56-55 to win the National Netball Championships title at Stellenberg High School in Cape Town. Sigi Burger scored in the dying seconds to secure a last-gasp victory for the home team. Mangaung earned a narrow 45-44 win over Johannesburg in the third-place play-off. Meanwhile, in the Under 21-division of the championship, defending champions Johannesburg claimed a 52-38 victory against Tshwane. Cape Town captain Sian Moore says she is proud of the fighting spirit they showed:
And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-18-cents and the euro at 18-rand-67-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-86-cents and Bitcoin trades at 63-thousand-778-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-404-dollars-14-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 92-dollars-50-cents a barrel.
