# Western Cape police say their sniffer dogs, Abbey and Lex, led rescuers to a survivor under the rubble in the George building collapse yesterday. Warrant officer Willie Visser and his sniffer dog, Abbey’s much-needed lead was confirmed by Lex with handler, warrant officer Riaan le Roux. The 33-year tiler Gabriel Guambe survived for 116 hours before being found. Police spokesperson Christopher Spies says Guambe is doing well in hospital:
Meanwhile, the rescue mission continues for a seventh day today. By early this morning the death toll had risen to 15 after another body was found, with another 14 patients still hospitalised. Of the 81 people who were on the site on Monday when disaster struck, 44 have been rescued and 37 are still unaccounted for.
# President Cyril Ramaphosa says the ANC government will continue to curb poverty levels and inequality through assisting people’s livelihoods through social grants. Speaking in Malamulele at a Limpopo election rally, Ramphosa said this will be achieved as the country’s economy grows and industrialisation progresses. He says the first task former president Nelson Mandela embarked on was to make sure older citizens get equal grants to that of white people:
# Rugby: The Lions boosted their United Rugby Championship playoff hopes with a bonus-point victory over Cardiff in Johannesburg. The 34-13 victory sees the Lions close the gap on eighth-placed Benetton to four points, after the Italian side produced a major upset by beating the Sharks 25-24 in Durban. In Pretoria, flyhalf Chris Smith kicked 20 points to help the Bulls to beat Glasgow Warriors 40-34. After the 16th round, Glasgow top the table, with the Bulls in 4th position and the Stormers, 5th.
# And finally: Minister of Health, Joe Phaahla and Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko will join nurses to commemorate International Nurses Day at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Soweto today. The day commemorates the birth of the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale. The department’s spokesperson, Motalatale Modiba says the commemorative event aims to honour and appreciate the significant contributions made by nurses in serving patients with warmth, compassion and empathy.
