# National Director of Public Prosecutions, Shamila Batohi, says a news report claiming she announced imminent arrests of state capture accused is fake. The NDPP does not make any announcements on arrests. The NDPP has been criticised for not doing enough to bring those responsible for state capture to book. Last year, the Nulane case, described by the Investigating Directorate as the blueprint for state capture prosecutions, fell apart when the presiding officer ruled the case could not continue. Many high-profile individuals implicated by the Zondo Commission have still not faced criminal charges.
# The African Transformation Movement says introducing a Digital Nomad visa Bill poses significant concerns as it undermines the universally accepted principle that only foreign nationals contributing to the host nation’s economy through employment and tax payment should be granted visas. The ATM’s spokesperson, Zama Ntshona says the introduction of the Bill in South Africa contradicts the principles of economic development and skill transfer essential for sustainable growth:
# Limpopo police have confirmed that a 54-year-old man, who was on the run, after shooting and killing his wife during a church service handed himself to the police yesterday afternoon. The incident took place on Saturday evening at Makonde Village. Police spokesperson, Malesela Ledwaba, says the suspect will appear in court tomorrow:
# Former US president Donald Trump has posted a 3.3-billion-rand bond in his New York civil fraud case, averting the seizure of his asset by state authorities. He originally needed to pay around 8.6-billion-rand, but an Appeals Court ruled that he could pay the smaller sum within ten days. Trump and top executives at his company, including his two older sons, were accused of having schemed for years to deceive banks and insurers, by inflating their wealth on financial statements to secure loans and make deals. He has denied any wrongdoing.
# Tennis: American qualifier, Katie Volynets, came out the winner in the longest women’s match of the year so far in the first round of the Charleston Open. The 22-year-old defeated Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands, 6-2, 6-7, 7-6, in three hours and 43 minutes. Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark thrashed McCartney Kessler of the US, 6-0, 6-1. American Amanda Anisimova, who has not played since the Australian Open, beat Alize Cornet of France, 6-3, 6-0. Anisimova says she is happy to be playing again:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-92-cents and the euro at 20-rand-31-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-73-cents and Bitcoin trades at 66-thousand-707-dollars-81-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-252-dollars-51-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 87-dollars-81-cents a barrel.
