# The Congress of the People says there is a need for an urgent overhaul of the criminal justice system to comply with the constitutional values of accountability, responsiveness, and effectiveness. This follows a Gqeberha rape survivor’s open letter to president Cyril Ramaphosa, saying she can no longer continue being a victim of the criminal justice system. This is after her damages claim case against the police was postponed once more. COPE’s, Erick Mohlapamaswi, says Ramaphosa has failed to resolve gender-based violence:
# Parliament’s standing committee on Public Accounts and the Special Investigating Unit have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen the relationship between the two. The MOU will create greater cohesion by investigating and reporting on matters regarding irregular, fruitless, and wasteful expenditure of public funds. Matters referred by Scopa to the SIU for investigation or the motivation for a proclamation include the Eskom intelligence report and the National Skills Fund.
# Five nurses from the Steve Biko Academic Hospital have been placed on precautionary suspension following allegations of gross negligence. Their suspension follows an incident at the hospital involving a 28-year-old man, which was captured on video by a member of the public at the emergency unit last month. The department’s spokesperson, Motalatale Modiba, says the patient died in the hospital:
# Rust film armourer, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, and could now face up to three years in prison. Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins died after a gun that actor Alec Baldwin was holding fired a live round on the set of the movie in New Mexico in October 2021. Gutierrez Reed, who was responsible for firearm safety and storage on the movie’s set, was acquitted of a separate charge of evidence tampering. Baldwin also faces a manslaughter trial over the fatality.
# Basketball: South Africa is set to co-host the fourth season of the Basketball League Africa, with matches starting at Pretoria’s SunBet Arena this Saturday. League president Amadou Gallo Fall announced an expanded season spanning four months, with matches in South Africa, Egypt, Senegal, and Rwanda. This marks the league’s first season played in four different countries, featuring 12 club teams from across Africa in 48 matches:
