Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Paul Mashatile urges South Africans to reject vigilantism
# Zimbabwe’s Parliament extends the presidential term from five to seven years
# And rugby: Rassie says the Stormers showed the Bulls how to beat Leinster
# Deputy president Paul Mashatile says the government is currently implementing a comprehensive approach for migration management, aimed at strengthening border security, enforcing immigration laws, tackling corruption, and closing policy loopholes. This is part of a broader effort to address illegal immigration in South Africa. Answering questions in the National Council of Provinces yesterday, Mashatile urged citizens to express concerns lawfully, within the parameters of the Constitution, and reject vigilantism:
Mashatile also says the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster is implementing corrective actions to detect and prevent corruption in the South African Police Service. This is amidst damning revelations at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which has resulted in several arrests and suspensions in recent months. Mashatile says dedicated teams continue to investigate SAPS officials who have been implicated in the commission, with a specialised task team handling disciplinary cases:
# The MK Party has called on its members and supporters to take part in the planned 30 June march against illegal migration in a disciplined and lawful manner. The party says it supports the protest, which focuses on calls for the enforcement of immigration laws and the removal of illegal immigrants from South Africa. MK secretary-general Sibonelo Nomvalo warns against any violence, intimidation, looting, or destruction of property:
# Ekurhuleni mayoral committee member for Finance, Jongizizwe Dlabathi, says they will continue to engage with political parties to find a way for the proposed 2026/2027 budget to be passed. The budget failed to pass for a fourth consecutive time yesterday, with 95 councillors voting in favour and 105 against. The ANC-led coalition now has until the end of this month to secure support for a lawful budget, failing which the metro could face provincial intervention. Dlabathi has urged parties to engage with maturity.
# Zimbabwe’s Parliament has approved a controversial amendment bill to the Constitution that will extend the tenure of presidents from five to seven years. The proposal was backed by 216 lawmakers, while 42 opposed. The bill will now go to the Senate, and if passed, will be signed into law by president Emmerson Mnangagwa, extending his rule by two years. The bill also proposes shifting presidential elections from direct popular vote to selection by lawmakers. The 83-year-old came to power in 2017 after the ousting of the late Robert Mugabe.
# Rugby: Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus says the Stormers showed the Bulls how to beat Leinster at home after losing the United Rugby Championship semifinal against the Irish team. The Bulls and Leinster face off in the final in Dublin tonight. Erasmus says the Stormers did South Africa proud despite losing, pointing out ill-discipline cost them dearly and they were without several injured star players. He expects the hosts to be a tough ask, but backs the Bulls to do one better than the Stormers.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-44-cents and the euro at 18-rand-84-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-70-cents and Bitcoin trades at 62-thousand-888-dollars.
