BULLETIN 15 June 7 am
Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# A peace agreement has been reached between the US and Iran
# Minister Kubayi says the government is in control of illegal migration
# And motorsport: Lewis Hamilton wins in Barcelona for his first Ferrari F1 victory
# We start with international news: Pakistan’s prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, who has been acting as a mediator, has confirmed that a peace deal has been agreed between the US and Iran. He says both sides have declared the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon. President Donald Trump says the US is lifting its naval blockade on Iranian ports, and that the Strait of Hormuz will reopen after the agreement is signed. The official signing ceremony of the deal will be on Friday in Switzerland.
# Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, says government is not turning a blind eye to immigration issues, but is firmly in control of managing this challenge. The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration, established by president Cyril Ramaphosa, gave an update on measures to address migration challenges. This is amidst ongoing anti-illegal-immigrants protests in parts of the country. Kubayi says the Border Management Authority has tightened security at all land, air, and sea ports of entry:
Kubayi also says over 40-thousand illegal foreign nationals have been arrested since the beginning of 2026, with over seven-thousand-400 arrests made in the past month alone. This follows government intensifying efforts to tackle illegal immigration and strengthen border security. Kubayi says they strongly dispute the false narrative that South Africa is inherently xenophobic or unwelcoming to people from outside its borders:
# The Forum for South Africa has called for president Cyril Ramaphosa to resign, accusing him of avoiding accountability over the Phala Phala matter. The organisation says Ramaphosa’s legal efforts to halt Parliament’s impeachment process raise serious questions about his leadership and credibility. FOSA spokesperson Tebogo Mashilompane argues that the country cannot be led by a president whose conduct is under scrutiny, stating it’s time for accountability and ethical leadership:
# Social justice activist Mark Heywood says the sacrifices made 50-years-ago by the youth of June 16, 1976, laid the foundation for South Africa’s democracy, however many of the promises of freedom remain unfulfilled. In an opinion piece on the Daily Maverick, Heywood argues that the road to Freedom Day in 1994 began with the Soweto Uprising, where young people challenged apartheid at great personal cost. He says the death of Hector Pieterson symbolises the price paid for democracy and calls for renewed efforts to address inequality, unemployment, and social injustice.
# Motorsport: Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton claimed his maiden victory for Ferrari, winning the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. This was his first victory since the Belgian Grand Prix in July 2024, when he was still driving for Mercedes, and his 106th career F1 win. George Russell for Mercedes finished second with McLaren’s Lando Norris in third for a first all-British podium since 1968. World championship leader Kimi Antonelli was forced to retire late in the race with car issues. Antonelli leads by 41 points over Hamilton after seven races.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-18-cents and the euro at 18-rand-77-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-75-cents and Bitcoin trades at 65-thousand-620-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-315-dollars-55-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 83-dollars-13-cents a barrel.
