# President Cyril Ramaphosa says he will continue to do everything within his means to advance the rebuilding of the economy, the restoration of institutions and the renewal of society. He addressed the nation at the Union Buildings yesterday evening, where he announced that he will review the independent panel report on Phala Phala. Ramaphosa said, guided by the rule of law and the principle of accountability, he intends to fulfil and complete the mandate given to him:
# The South African Commercial Catering and Allied Workers Union strongly condemns Pick ‘n Pay’s proposed restructuring affecting about 22-thousand employees. The union’s Sithembele Tshwete warns that workers face retrenchments or a downward variation of working conditions, including reduced hours, loss of benefits, and changes to shift arrangements. He says SACCAWU accuses the company of bypassing internal negotiations and says it will oppose any attempts to weaken collective agreements or undermine job security.
# The Cape Town Disaster Risk Management Centre says the impacts from the frontal system, which made landfall on Monday, have been extensive. Severe storms caused flooding, power outages, and damage, with one death reported in Kenilworth. As the severe weather continues, all public and special schools in the Western Cape are closed today. Disaster Risk Management spokesperson, Charlotte Powell, says teams will continue to attend to service faults, but there could be delays due to the windy conditions:
# US president Donald Trump says the ceasefire between the US and Iran is on “massive life support”. This follows Tehran’s latest counterproposal to end hostilities, which he called “simply unacceptable”. The one-page, 14-point US memorandum includes provisions such as a suspension of Iranian nuclear enrichment and restoring free transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Answering questions at the Oval Office on Monday, Trump stated that he believes a diplomatic solution to the war is still possible:
# Tennis: There is concern over world number one Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus’ fitness shortly before the French Open. She required treatment during her third-round match against Sorana Cirstea of Romania in the Italian Open and eventually lost in three sets. This was Sabalenka’s second defeat in three matches after also losing to Hailey Baptiste of America in the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open in Spain. She hopes to be fit when the claycourt Grand Slam starts in Paris on the 24th.
# Die financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-46-cents and the euro at 19-rand-36-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-37-cents, and Bitcoin trades at 81-thousand-288-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-733-dollars-10-cents a fine ounce, and Brent crude oil is quoted at 102-dollars-91-cents a barrel.
# And finally, South African superstar Tyla will be one of the performers for the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup. Three separate ceremonies will be staged across the host nations, the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The celebrations will begin on June 11th in Mexico, where Grammy award-winning Tyla will perform alongside the likes of J Balvin and Los Ángeles Azules. The US and Canada’s opening ceremonies will happen on June 12, with Tyla also performing at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles alongside acts like Katy Perry and Rema.
