Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Paul Mashatile says South Africa’s water challenges require increased investment in infrastructure
# AfriForum criticises the postponement of the Khampepe commission Naidoo
# And cricket: Kass says South Africa needs a women’s league to win cups
# Deputy president Paul Mashatile says South Africa is facing a critical water insecurity crisis fuelled by a mix of climate change, ageing infrastructure, socio-economic inequality, and poor municipal management. He addressed the Association of Water and Sanitation Institutions of South Africa on Monday. Mashatile says ageing infrastructure has led to non-revenue water rates as high as 40 to 50-percent in some areas, due to leaks, operational inefficiencies, and illegal connections:
# AfriForum has expressed disappointment after the first session of the Khampepe Commission was postponed to 26 November. The commission set to begin in Pretoria yesterday was set up to investigate delays in prosecuting crimes identified by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. AfriForum’s Kallie Kriel says families of these victims, like the Cradock Four, deserve answers. Kriel calls for the commission to examine political interference that prevented prosecutions of senior ANC members:
# A new study by the Institute of Race Relations reveals that 92-percent of South Africans want national sports teams chosen on merit, not race. Support spans all communities as 92-percent black, 92-percent coloured, 86-percent Indian, and 93-percent white respondents. IRR communications head Hermann Pretorius says the findings show citizens want talent and performance, not racial quotas, to determine selection. The full report will be released on 26 November.
# Acting Police minister Firoz Cachalia says they have revised the anti-gang violence strategy. He led a high-level police delegation to Westbury and Reiger Park yesterday. Last month, seven teenagers were shot in Westbury, and two died when gunmen opened fire at a suspected drug den. Earlier this month, six people in Reiger Park were killed in a suspected gang-related shooting. Cachalia says the government has allocated funding for the implementation of the strategy:
# BBC chairman Samir Shah has issued an apology after a speech by US president Donald Trump was edited in an episode of Panorama, calling it an error of judgment. The programme had misleadingly edited a speech by Trump to make it appear that he had directly called for violence on Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021. BBC director general Tim Davie and the CEO of news, Deborah Turness, have resigned. Shah has rejected claims of systemic bias:
# Cricket: Renowned commentator Kass Naidoo believes South Africa needs a women’s league to build on the success of the Proteas Women’s participating in the one-day World Cup in India. They only succumbed to the hostesses in the final after impressing almost throughout the tournament. Naidoo is particularly proud of South Africa’s emphatic victory over England in the semifinal. She says most of India’s women play in the Women’s Premier League, and South Africa needs a similar competition for the country’s women to bring home the silverware.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-14-cents and the euro at 19-rand-81-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-56-cents and Bitcoin trades at 106-thousand-584-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-135-dollars-1-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 63-dollars-74-cents a barrel.
