# Judgment is reserved in the publication of the matric results case
# The US military kills 14 people in strikes on four alleged drug boats in the Pacific
# And cricket: Bosch and Hendricks spearhead the Proteas’ win against Pakistan in the first T20
# Judgement has been reserved in the case regarding the publication of matric results in newspapers and on other public platforms. Over the past two days, the High Court in Pretoria has heard arguments from the Information Regulator, the Department of Basic Education and AfriForum. The regulator maintains that the manner in which matric results are published contravenes the Protection of Personal Information Act. AfriForum’s Alana Bailey says the use of examination numbers instead of pupils’ names provides sufficient protection for their privacy:
# National Coloured Congress member of Parliament, Fadiel Adams, has laid perjury charges against KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. The charges are based on Mkhwanazi’s parliamentary testimony, where he alleged former Police minister Bheki Cele leaked bank details to attempted murder-accused Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala, claims he later withdrew. Adams argued that such statements have the potential to erode public trust in the SAPS leadership. Adams has also denied Mkhwanazi’s accusation that he recklessly handled Crime Intelligence information. He adds that he is concerned about Mkhwanazi’s credibility.
# Transport minister Barbara Creecy has launched PRASA’s renewable energy initiative and celebrated the rollout of the 300th locally built train in Isipingo, KwaZulu-Natal. Creecy told Newzroom Afrika that the trains, made from South African steel, mark progress in advanced manufacturing and job creation. The minister also unveiled the new Isipingo Mall in KwaZulu-Natal, part of PRASA’s urban renewal drive:
# The Ministry of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities welcomes the arrest of a suspect in the killing of two young women in Mamelodi East, in Tshwane. Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga condemned the violence and praised the police for their rapid response, urging the justice system to act without delay. The suspect is expected to appear in the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court today. Ministry spokesperson Cassius Selala urged communities to work with police to stop violence against women:
# The US military killed 14 people in strikes on four vessels suspected of carrying drugs in the eastern Pacific Ocean. One person survived. Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth says the boats were known by intelligence apparatus, transiting along known narco-trafficking routes, and carrying narcotics. The latest operation in the eastern Pacific brings the total to nearly 60 killed in more than a dozen strikes since early September. The strikes have drawn condemnation in the region, and experts have questioned their legality.
# Cricket: South Africa defeated Pakistan by 55 runs in the first T20 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Reeza Hendricks scored 60 off 40 balls as the Proteas posted 194 for nine in their allotted 20 overs. In reply, Corbin Bosch produced a career-best bowling performance, taking four wickets and was backed by George Linde, who claimed three wickets, as Pakistan were bowled out for 139. The remaining two T20 matches will be played on Friday and Saturday, both in Lahore.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-13-cents and the euro at 19-rand-96-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-74-cents and Bitcoin trades at 112-thousand-691-dollars.
