# Paul Mashatile says the ANC is returning to the teachings of O.R. Tambo as part of its renewal
# Biden urges Americans to stay optimistic under Trump’s presidency
# And athletics: Athletics South Africa president James Moloi is facing suspension
# ANC deputy president, Paul Mashatile, says the party is rededicating itself to the teachings of Oliver Reginald Tambo as part of its renewal programme. He delivered a keynote address at the O.R. Tambo Memorial Lecture in Gauteng yesterday under the theme, Reaffirming the Moral Compass of Our Struggle: Unity, Integrity, and Renewal. Mashatile says they are committed to rebuilding the ANC to be strong once again:
# President Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa’s exit from the Financial Action Task Force grey list bodes well for the integrity and reputation of the country’s financial system. In 2023, South Africa was placed on the grey list for failing to meet certain international standards. In his weekly newsletter, Ramaphosa says the country’s exit from the grey list demonstrates that the anti-money laundering system is beginning to act against corruption and other financial crimes. He adds that much work remains to be done to reduce and prevent financial crimes.
# SA Harvest has launched its greenhouse programme to tackle South Africa’s food waste and hunger crisis. The initiative transforms rescued produce into sustainable agriculture through hydroponics and community training. Operating in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, the project promotes food sovereignty, job creation, and climate action while reducing landfill waste and building long-term food resilience nationwide. CEO Ozzy Nel says hunger and food waste are two sides of the same solvable problem.
# The DA says Parliament’s portfolio committee on Higher Education and Training needs to launch an urgent inquiry into the deepening corruption and governance collapse at Walter Sisulu University. Testifying at the Jafta Commission of Inquiry, Ka-myaluza Security CEO Sibusiso Ngubane levelled allegations of serious corruption, extortion, and employment irregularities against at least six senior university officials. The DA’s Delmaine Christians says this was all in exchange for securing or retaining lucrative security contracts:
# Former US president Joe Biden has urged Americans to stay optimistic about what he calls the dark days under Donald Trump’s hardline presidency. The 82-year-old was speaking in Boston after receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Edward M. Kennedy Institute. He was speaking publicly for the first time since completing a round of radiation therapy for an aggressive form of prostate cancer. Biden says America depends on a presidency with limited power, a functioning Congress, and an autonomous judiciary:
# Athletics: Athletics South Africa president, James Moloi, has been served with a suspension notice. This follows a report by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee into Moloi’s use of his ASA credit card, particularly a string of questionable costs, including spending at taverns. Moloi has been given until Friday to give reasons why he should not be suspended. The ASA says a disciplinary committee will investigate whether any action should be taken against any other official, including the acting CEO and finance manager.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-22-cents and the euro at 20-rand-7-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-98-cents and Bitcoin trades at 114-thousand-448-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-12-dollars-76-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 64-dollars-93-cents a barrel.
