# Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi alleges the investigation against Dumisani Khumalo was obstructed
# Volkswagen recalls 374 Amorak vehicles
# And cricket: The Proteas women clinch the ODI against Pakistan
# KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi says senior judiciary and intelligence officials obstructed investigations into Crime Intelligence head Dumisani Khumalo, facing fraud and corruption charges. He claims that bail conditions and directives blocked Khumalo and co-accused officers from accessing crime intelligence offices, disrupting ongoing probes. Mkhwanazi alleges that certain officials, including an Investigating Directorate Against Corruption officer and magistrates, acted in a coordinated manner to stall the case:
Mkhwanazi also said he did not break ranks when he held a media briefing on 6 July. Responding to accusations that he bypassed protocol, Mkhwanazi says he was updating the public on the disbandment of the task team responsible for investigating political killings. He explained that he and his colleagues wore military uniforms as a show of force, warning against criminal networks infiltrating crime intelligence, Parliament, and the executive:
# The National Consumer Commission has advised consumers that Volkswagen of South Africa has recalled 374 Amorak vehicles, made available from 10 January to 12 June this year. The vehicles are recalled due to the possible loss of braking assistance that may be caused by the electromechanical brake servo control unit. According to Volkswagen, the braking system remains functional but needs additional effort when applying the brakes, with a subsequent increased braking distance. Affected vehicles are to be taken to any Volkswagen-approved dealership for assessment, at no cost to the consumer.
# The family of a British couple who were detained by the Taliban for nearly eight months says they are “overwhelmed with gratitude and relief” at the couple’s release. The 80-year-old Peter Reynolds and his 76-year-old wife, Barbie, who lived in Afghanistan for nearly two decades, were on their way home when they were stopped on 1 February. The couple was freed on Friday morning through Qatari mediation. The Taliban said the pair had broken Afghan laws and were released after judicial proceedings, but has never disclosed the reason for their detention.
# And finally sports news:
# Cricket: The Proteas Women posted a daunting total of 292 for three before winning the second one-day international against Pakistan in Lahore on Friday by 26 runs. Tazmin Brits’ magnificent 171 not out dominated a record opening partnership of 260 with captain Laura Wolvaardt. Rain interrupted play after 41 overs with the Proteas on 238 without loss and the match was reduced to 46 overs with Brits on 133 and Wolvaardt on 93. Pakistan were bowled out for 287 in 44 overs and 4 balls to concede the three-match series 2-0, with the final game to come on Sunday.
# And motorsport: Lewis Hamilton topped the times ahead of his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc and former partner George Russell of Mercedes in Friday’s second free practice session for this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix. While the title-chasing McLaren duo series leader Oscar Piastri and closest rival Lando Norris experienced a difficult afternoon, the seven-time champion demonstrated why he had felt optimistic on Thursday. Hamilton finished the session with a best lap in 1-minute-41.293-seconds. Should he claim a record-increasing 106th win on Sunday, he would also become the first F1 driver to score five-thousand points.
