BULLETIN 6 September 7 am
Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into the criminal justice system is set to begin its hearings on 17 September
# A legal body condemns the murder of an insolvency attorney Bouwer van Niekerk near his Sandton offices
# And rugby: Most punters favour the All Blacks in the epic battle against the Boks at Eden Park
# The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into criminality, political interference and corruption in the criminal justice system has confirmed that its public hearings into allegations raised by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will now start on 17 September. The hearings were delayed due to procurement setbacks by the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development. Spokesperson Jeremy Michaels says contracts for IT equipment and infrastructure have been finalised:
# The South African Restructuring and Insolvency Practitioners Association has expressed outrage at the assassination of insolvency attorney Bouwer van Niekerk in his Sandton office. SARIPA says attacks like this threaten the justice system and the safety of legal practitioners. They believe the killing is a devastating loss to the legal and insolvency community. The association’s chairperson, Jo Mitchell-Marais, said it’s heartbreaking that ethical practitioners should risk their lives simply for doing their jobs.
# The Electricity and Energy Department is revising the Electricity Pricing Policy as power has become unaffordable for households and businesses. Presenting the summer outlook, Electricity and Energy minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa warned that rising tariffs erode disposable incomes and hurt competitiveness. The minister confirmed that consultations will extend nationwide to design a fairer framework. He says the review should be concluded by mid-2026 after robust public engagement:
# Seven people in England and Scotland have been charged with terrorism offenses allegedly linked to the banned group Palestine Action. The police said the alleged offenses relate to arranging public protests in support of the group in London, Manchester and Cardiff, as well as a demonstration today in London. The UK organisation Defend our Juries said the seven people were members of its group. Palestine Action’s ban makes it illegal to be a member of the group and puts them on par with organisations such as Hamas, al Qaeda and ISIS.
# Rugby: Bok supporters will be glued to their TV sets in just over two hours from now when the Boks will take on the All Blacks in a Rugby Championship encounter at Eden Park in Auckland. The last time the Boks won at Eden Park was in 1937. New Zealand is currently defending a 50-match winning streak on their home ground. However, some analysts point out that South Africa does hold a strong head-to-head advantage, having won the last four consecutive matches against the All Blacks, including the most recent encounter. Kick off is at 9:05 am.
And in more Rugby news, the Springbok Women coach Swys de Bruin has selected Babalwa Latsha to captain the Springbok Women in tomorrow’s Rugby World Cup Pool D decider against France at Franklin’s Gardens. Latsha, the most capped prop in Bok Women history, leads the team for the first time. Debut starts go to flyhalf Mary Zulu and lock Anathi Qolo, with four players set for first appearances. He expressed confidence in the changes:
