# Donald Trump reiterates his view that there is genocide against white farmers
# AfriForum says the departure of 49 Afrikaners is an indictment against the ANC
# And cricket: The IPL is set to resume on Saturday
# US president Donald Trump has reiterated his stance that there is a genocide happening in South Africa, claiming that the media was refusing to write about it given that the alleged victims were white. This comes as a group of 49 Afrikaners left for the US on a chartered flight on Sunday after Trump offered to grant refugee status to white Afrikaners. Trump says he is expecting to meet with the South African leadership next week:
Meanwhile, AfriForum has labeled the departure of 49 Afrikaners to the US as a serious indictment against South Africa’s ANC-led government. The government disputes these claims, asserting that Afrikaners remain among the country’s most economically privileged groups. CEO Kallie Kriel attributes this exodus to the government’s failure to denounce the implementation of policies like the Expropriation Act, which permits land seizures without compensation:
# Communications and Digital Technologies minister Solly Malatsi says while the government has made significant strides in improving access to services over the past two decades, the digital transformation journey has been uncoordinated. The minister has launched the Digital Transformation of the South African Government, aimed at driving the adoption of digital technologies in government. Malatsi says they have a four-point plan to push the government’s use of digital platforms and technology. These include a single, zero-rated digital services platform and a data exchange framework.
# The DA urges president Cyril Ramaphosa to urgently authorise a Special Investigating Unit probe into a decade of alleged corruption and mismanagement at the Johannesburg Property Company. The party has filed a motion of no confidence in mayor Dada Morero and submitted supporting documents to the Presidency. The DA’s Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku says the company has failed to manage the city’s property assets, allowed buildings to be hijacked, and ignored findings from oversight bodies:
# Celebrity Kim Kardashian is to testify in a Paris court today, nearly a decade after being robbed of jewellery during the French capital’s fashion week. Ten suspects, a gang in their 60s and 70s, have been on trial since late April over the armed robbery, which saw jewellery worth some 182-million-rand stolen from the reality TV star and influencer. Kardashian was robbed in 2016 while staying at an exclusive, discreet hotel in central Paris. She was threatened with a gun to the head and tied up with her mouth taped.
# Cricket: The Indian Premier League will resume on Saturday with a revised schedule. It was suspended for a week last Friday due to escalating hostilities between India and neighbouring Pakistan. A day later, a ceasefire was announced. The IPL says 17 matches will be played across six venues, culminating with the final on June 3rd, which was originally scheduled to be held on the 25th of this month. The revised schedule includes two double-headers, which will be played on two Sundays.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-27-cents and the euro at 20-rand-29-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-8-cents and Bitcoin trades at 102-thousand-317-dollar-10-cents. Gold sells at three-thousand-223-dollars-19-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 64-dollars-82-cents a barrel.
