# Israel will appear before the International Court of Justice in the Hague on 11 and 12 January, to contest South Africa’s genocide accusations over the war with Hamas in Gaza. South Africa asked the ICJ on Friday for an urgent order declaring that Israel was in breach of its obligations under the 1948 Genocide Convention in its crackdown against Hamas. South Africa has for decades backed the Palestinian cause for statehood in Israeli-occupied territories and has likened the plight of Palestinians to those of the Black majority in South Africa during the apartheid era.

In an interview with Newzroom Afrika, Kruger points out that Eskom is consistently grappling with a substantial portion of its capacity under maintenance. He critiques the government’s claims of aggressive maintenance, asserting that true maintenance involves taking units offline, leading to more load-shedding. Kruger predicts that alternating stages of load-shedding will persist for at least the first six months of 2024:

The plan includes contract management reviews and measures by entities like the Land Bank and Public Investment Corporation to address their audit issues.

Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko meanwhile has expressed satisfaction at how the Gauteng Emergency Medical Service responded to emergencies during the festive period. She joined EMS personnel on the ground on New Year’s Eve as they responded to emergency calls. The department’s spokesperson, Motalatale Modiba says during the critical period between 6am on Sunday and 6am on New Year’s Day, the provincial Emergency Communication Centre recorded a total of one-thousand-914 calls:
