In this bulletin:
# Ramokgopa warns anyone trying to sow division within the ANC
# Twenty-one police officers were shot and killed during the festive season
# And Wouter Kellerman wins his third Grammy Award
# ANC treasurer general, Gwen Ramokgopa, has urged members to resist anyone who wants to divide the party. She delivered the keynote address at the ANC Gauteng’s 113th January 8 Statement Provincial Rally at the Alexandra Stadium on Sunday. Last month, the ANC national executive committee moved to reconfigure the provincial executive committees of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. Ramokgopa says they must maintain strong in ensuring that no party will divide the ANC:
# National police commissioner Fannie Masemola says the ongoing attacks and killing of men and women in blue cannot continue. From October last year to date, nine on-duty police officers and 12 off-duty police officers have been shot and killed across the country. Masemola says this is a crime that requires all of South Africans to stand against and prevent it from happening:
# Gauteng MEC for Finance and Economic Development, Lebogang Maile, says compliance amongst businesses continues to be a serious challenge across all municipalities. Authorities have shut down 296 non-compliant spaza shops and food-handling facilities, as part of the provincial government’s crackdown on illegal and unsafe businesses. Maile says many of the shutdown businesses fail to meet basic environmental health and safety standards, while some operate without proper zoning approvals. Spaza shops and food-handling businesses have until the 28th of this month to register.
# US president Donald Trump says tariffs imposed on Mexico, Canada, and China, may bring some pain but it will all be worth the price. The tariffs will amount to a 25-percent duty on all imports from Mexico and most goods from Canada, and a ten-percent tariff on Chinese goods. Canada and Mexico alone account for over a quarter of all US imports and supply a significant share of Americans’ food in several key categories. Trump says America should not be losing trillions of dollars in subsidising other countries.
# Golf: South Africa’s Daniel van Tonder won the MyGolfLife Open by two shots at the Pecanwood Golf and Country Club in the North West, to capture his fourth Sunshine Tour title of the season. He closed with a 67 to win on 27 under par, claiming his second victory in as many weeks after winning the SDC Open. His compatriot Martin Vorster finished second with Australia’s Danny List in third place. Van Tonder says he has been working hard and it’s nice to see the results come through now:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-99-cents and the euro at 19-rand-42-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-33-cents and Bitcoin trades at 93-thousand-480-dollar-10-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-783-dollars-30-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 76-dollars-19-cents a barrel.
# And finally: South African flautist, composer, and producer, Wouter Kellerman, has won a Grammy Award in the Best New Age, Ambient, or Chant Album category. This is for his album Triveni, a meditative and spiritual collaboration with Japanese cellist Eru Matsumoto and Indian vocalist Chandrika Tandon. Kellerman is the only South African solo artist ever to have received five Grammy nominations. In his acceptance speech, Kellerman, who now has won three Grammys, says winning is amazing:
