# Paul Mashatile warns against locals registering spaza shops for immigrants

# Deputy president Mashatile says while the government wants to see South Africans owning most spaza shops, he cautioned against the registration of these businesses for illegal immigrants. Government has directed that all spaza shops and food handling facilities be registered by next Sunday. This comes amid a foodborne outbreak that has killed over 20 children in the country. Answering questions in the National Council of Provinces yesterday, Mashatile said in the long term government will review and strengthen laws to control business operations:
# Former National Assembly speaker, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, has brought an application to compel the State to disclose the entirety of the police docket. She is accused of receiving 2.1-million-rand in kickbacks while she was Defence minister. She appeared in court yesterday. News24 reports that according to the state, Part A of the docket, which includes all the evidence used in the trial, has already been disclosed to Mapisa-Nqakula. Parts B and C of the docket contain the investigation diary, which is not ordinarily disclosed to the defence.
# About 200 patients had to be evacuated at Netcare Pretoria East Hospital after a fire broke out yesterday evening. One of the theatres caught fire, prompting emergency teams to evacuate patients and staff from the building. Netcare’s spokesperson, Lynne O’Connor, told Newzroom Afrika that firefighters responded speedily and managed to contain the fire. She says the hospital has since been declared safe and the patients have been taken back into the building:
# Build One South Africa leader Mmusi Maimane has condemned the escalating political violence in Mozambique following recent elections. He urged president Cyril Ramaphosa to work with regional leaders and the Southern African Development Community to mediate the crisis, fostering peace and upholding democratic principles. Maimane appealed for an international relief fund to assist victims and highlighted the need for credible, free, and fair elections in Mozambique if a rerun is required.
# Golf: Defending champion Max Homa of the US leads South Africa’s Ockie Strydom by one shot, after carding an opening round six-under 66 at the Nedbank Golf Challenge in Sun City. English pair Andy Sullivan and Matthew Jordan are three strokes back in tied third alongside Spain’s Pablo Larrazabal and the Netherlands’s Thorbjorn Olesen, while South Africa’s Christiaan Bezuidenhout is in the group a further shot back. Homa says overall he played well:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-5-cents and the euro at 19-rand-8-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-1-cents and Bitcoin trades at 97-thousand-845-dollar-71-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-619-dollars-7-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 71-dollars-80-cents a barrel.
# And finally: The City of Ekurhuleni urges residents to take safety precautions as a heatwave continues until Sunday. With high temperatures forecast, the city warns of the risks of dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Residents are advised not to leave open flames unattended and to stay hydrated by drinking water or sports drinks. The city also cautions against swimming in unauthorised areas and reminds parents to closely supervise children near water.
