# Police minister Senzo Mchunu has proposed financial support for legal miners as part of efforts to address illegal mining. Speaking during his visit to Stilfontein, North West, Mchunu suggested that the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources could assist those who have the skills but lack the funds to mine legally. He revealed illegal mining is rampant in seven provinces:
# Education activist Hendrick Makaneta has urged municipalities to organise safe and structured alternatives to pens down parties for learners done with exams. He expressed concerns over risks such as substance abuse, violence, and human trafficking at these unregulated gatherings. Makaneta suggests municipalities host alcohol and drug-free celebrations in secure venues with proper monitoring and safe transportation:
# The FairPlay Movement confirms a VAT-free chicken proposal has been submitted to the government on behalf of the South African Poultry Association and the Association of Meat Importers and Exporters. Targeting frozen bone-in chicken and offal, the proposal aims to make chicken more affordable for low-income households. According to News24, the proposal highlights the nutritional and economic benefits, addressing malnutrition and stunting.
# The British House of Commons voted in favour of an assisted-dying bill for England and Wales, allowing the proposed legislation to progress to the next stage of parliamentary scrutiny. MPs voted by 330 to 275 in support of legalised euthanasia, following an emotive debate that lasted almost five hours. The Bill states the person must be expected to die within six months and two independent doctors has to declare that they are eligible. A High Court judge would have to rule each time a person makes a request to end their life.
# And, cricket: South African batsmen dominated play on the third day of the first Test against Sri Lanka at Kings Park in Durban yesterday. Tristan Stubbs and Temba Bavuma both hit centuries to put the Proteas in an almost unassailable position. Stubbs on 122 and Bavuma on 113 ground down the Sri Lankan bowlers in a fourth wicket stand of 249 before South Africa declared their second innings at 366 for five. Sri Lanka were at 103 for five in their second innings at close of play. The visitors need 413 runs to win with five wickets remaining.
