# The South African Reserve Bank says former Finance minister Tito Mboweni played a meaningful role in driving economic transformation and social change. The 65-year-old passed away in hospital after a short illness. He served as the Reserve Bank governor between 1999 and 2009. The SARB says Mboweni guided South Africa through periods of great uncertainty, with a steady hand on the economy during the global financial crisis of 2008 as governor, and later shepherding the country’s finances through the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic as Finance minister.
Meanwhile, Parliament’s presiding officers, National Assembly Speaker, Thoko Didiza, and National Council of Provinces chairperson, Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, say Mboweni was a distinguished and versatile people servant. Parliament’s spokesperson, Moloto Mothapo, says Mboweni, South Africa’s first black Reserve Bank governor, dedicated his life, passion, and vast expertise to the service of the people of South Africa:

The killings include the murder of constable Asanda Siyoko from the Nyanga police station in Cape Town, who was gunned down while on duty. Lebeya says they have categorised police killings as a national priority offence.

US military personnel will be deployed to operate the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defence system. The Department of Defence says this action underscores the US’ strong commitment to the defence of Israel, and to defend Americans in Israel, from any further ballistic missile attacks by Iran.
