# The DA says the firing of Higher Education and Training minister, Nobuhle Nkabane, comes after relentless pressure in the fight against ANC corruption, wrongdoing, and criminality. There have been calls for her to step down, amid allegations that she misled Parliament about the independence of the panel responsible for recommending appointments for boards of the Sector Education and Training Authorities. The DA’s Karabo Khakhau says president Cyril Ramaphosa’s firing of Nkabane is momentous:
Meanwhile, RISE Mzansi has welcomed the removal of Nkabane, saying she epitomised political arrogance. RISE Mzansi’s spokesperson, Mabine Seabe, says Nkabane showed an unrepentant disregard for what it means to be in service to the people of South Africa:
# Public Works and Infrastructure minister, Dean Macpherson, says the election of the Independent Development Trust chairperson and deputy chairperson is a step toward cleaning up the agency. Zimbini Hill has been elected chairperson, and professor Raymond Nkado as the deputy chairperson. Macpherson says their renewed mandate is a clear endorsement of the work they have started to clean up governance at the agency, improve infrastructure delivery, and restore public confidence in the IDT.
# Western Cape MEC of Education David Maynier has welcomed learners and teachers as schools reopen for the third term. He congratulated parents for keeping children engaged during the winter holidays. Maynier says this term is crucial for grade 12 learners as they prepare for trial exams and has called on the public to support them during this important period:
# The Presidency has announced that president Cyril Ramaphosa will attend the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development in Yokohama next month. This year’s summit, themed People, Planet, and Prosperity in a Changing World, will host over 20 African leaders, global financial institutions, and bilateral partners including G7, G20, BRICS, and philanthropic organisations. Co-hosted by Japan, the UN, World Bank, and African Union, the Presidency says the conference is a key forum for African development, economic transformation, innovation, and universal health coverage.
# Cricket: South Africa and New Zealand will meet in Harare, Zimbabwe, today before playing in the final of the tri-nations T20 series at the same venue on Saturday. The hosts were already eliminated after losing their first three matches – twice against the Proteas and once against the Black Caps. New Zealand beat South Africa by 21 runs earlier in the tournament. The last round-robin match will take place between Zimbabwe and New Zealand on Thursday.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-62-cents and the euro at 20-rand-59-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-75-cents and Bitcoin trades at 117-thousand-24-dollar.
