# Deputy president Paul Mashatile says South Africa has gained momentum in the fight against tuberculosis by strengthening systems and embracing innovation and technology. He delivered the closing remarks at the 9th South African TB Conference in Boksburg, Gauteng, yesterday, in his capacity as the chairperson of the South African National AIDS Council. Mashatile stated that since 2015, the country has achieved a 61-percent reduction in TB incidence, surpassing the World Health Organisation’s 2025 milestone ahead of time:
# Home Affairs minister Leon Schreiber says foreign nationals must ensure they have valid visas or legal authorisation to stay in South Africa, as immigration laws continue to be strictly enforced. This follows the repatriation of 586 Nigerian nationals who were found to be in the country illegally. All affected individuals were declared undesirable, resulting in a five-year ban on re-entry. Schreiber urges foreign nationals to regularise their status to avoid similar action:
Meanwhile, the Border Management Authority says nine Bangladeshi nationals have been intercepted at OR Tambo International Airport in Gauteng after they attempted to enter South Africa using fraudulent travel documents. The group was found with fake South African visas and Indian passports during immigration processing yesterday and has since been sent back to Bangladesh. The authority’s Mmemme Mogotsi says investigations are underway to trace the source of the fake visas and passports:
# US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says the Iranian regime will lose the zero-sum game it is playing. The US and Iran traded strikes for a second consecutive day on Wednesday. Bessent has warned that any damage Tehran inflicts on American allies in the Gulf will be paid for with funds extracted from Iranian accounts. He also warned that any tolls paid to the Persian Gulf Strait Authority, a new body set up by Iran to control the Strait of Hormuz, will be offset by Iranian funds.
# Soccer: Bafana Bafana suffered a 2-0 defeat to co-host Mexico in the opening match of the World Cup at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez were on target for El Tri in a game that saw three red cards. Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio dismissed South Africa’s Sphephelo Sithole for denying a goalscoring opportunity, and Themba Zwane for striking a player in the face, then sending off Mexico’s Cesar Montes for a late foul. South Africa will face Czechia in Group A in Atlanta next Thursday.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-28-cents and the euro at 18-rand-81-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-81-cents and Bitcoin trades at 63-thousand-444-dollars. Ranked at number eleven, the Mother City is celebrated for its homegrown flavours, with the Cape Malay curry receiving a special mention. The Peruvian city of Lima came out on top, known for its seafood delicacies like ceviche. For a second year in a row, Bangkok in Thailand is number two, offering an unmatched street food culture.
