In this bulletin:
# The government urges the public to report illegal immigration through law enforcement channels
# Weapons were stolen after a break-in at an army base in Pretoria
# And, two Jewish men were stabbed in a terrorist incident in north London
# Government urges the public to report illegal activity to law enforcement authorities and not to take the law into their own hands. The plea follows ongoing public discourse on the issue, including protests by the anti-illegal migration group March and March. Deputy government spokesperson William Baloyi says concerns related to immigration and other unlawful conduct should be reported to the police or relevant departments so they can be handled legally and safely:
# The Bureau for Economic Research says better coordination is needed between the South African Reserve Bank and the National Treasury as global oil price shocks driven by tensions in the Strait of Hormuz push fuel prices higher. According to the bureau, temporary fuel levy relief can help keep inflation lower and reduce pressure on interest rates. It added that close fiscal and monetary coordination is needed to balance inflation control with economic growth amid ongoing fuel price volatility.
# The National Prosecuting Authority Gauteng has welcomed the sentences handed to the late former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe’s son, Bellarmine Mugabe, and his co-accused, Tobias Matonhodze. The Alexandra Magistrate’s Court sentenced Mugabe to 24 months in prison or 600-thousand-rand fine for firearms and immigration charges. His cousin Matonhodze was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for attempted murder. This is in relation to a shooting in Hyde Park in February. NPA spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole says they commend the prosecution team on this successful prosecution:
# A serious security breach is under investigation after a break-in at the South African National Defence Force Tekbase facility at Lyttelton Military Base in Pretoria. The break-in occurred on Monday, when a storeroom was forced open, and three R4 rifles and two 40-millimetre multiple rocket launchers were reported missing. The investigation is ongoing, with further verification underway to determine whether additional items are missing. The SANDF appeals for public assistance with information.
# Two Jewish men were stabbed in the Golders Green area of north London yesterday in what police have formally declared a terrorist incident. The victims, aged 76 and 34, are in a stable condition in hospital. This incident follows a spate of antisemitic attacks in Britain. Head of Counter Terrorism Policing, assistant commissioner Laurence Taylor, says the 45-year-old suspect also tried to stab police officers, and was tasered before being arrested on suspicion of attempted murder:
# Rugby: The Stormers will face the rest of the United Rugby Championship without Springbok scrumhalf Cobus Reinach and teenage star Markus Muller, who made his debut for the Cape Town team last weekend. Reinach sustained a knee injury against Glasgow Warriors and is expected to miss the Boks’ Nations Championship Tests against England, Scotland, and Wales. Muller fractured his finger, rendering him unavailable for the Junior Boks in the current Under-20 Rugby Championship in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-78-cents and the euro at 19-rand-60-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-63-cents and Bitcoin trades at 75-thousand-915-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-551-dollars-5-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 110-dollars-90-cents a barrel.
