# Fikile Mbalula says the ANC will not associate with Brown Mogotsi
# The police declare the Manchester synagogue attack a terrorist incident
# And cricket: The Proteas start their World Cup campaign against England today
# ANC members named at the Madlanga commission of Inquiry into political interference in the justice system are set to appear before the party’s integrity committee. This includes national executive committee member and Police minister Senzo Mchunu, implicated in allegations of interfering in the police. Briefing the media on the outcomes of the national working committee meeting, ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula also criticised businessman Brown Mogotsi, calling him a reflection of a bad ANC member:
# Higher Education and Training minister, Buti Manamela, has formally appointed new accounting authorities across all 21 Sector Education and Training Authorities. The appointments follow a high-profile controversy earlier this year that saw former minister Nobuhle Nkabane withdraw a slate of politically linked Seta board chairpersons, after intense public and parliamentary backlash. Manamela says these appointments signal a new governance cycle intended to restore institutional integrity and align the skills development system with national economic priorities.
# The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse has gone to the High Court in Pretoria, seeking changes to the Public Finance Management Act. The organisation states the current law has allowed failed leaders at institutions like South African Airways and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme to escape accountability. OUTA’s Stefanie Fick says this loophole protects executives who abuse public funds and allows them to move into other government roles without consequences:
# The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union in Gauteng will hold a Provincial Day of Action today, targeting the Department of Health. Members will deliver a memorandum of demands to the Health MEC, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, amid challenges including corruption, maladministration, dilapidated infrastructure, vacant posts, Occupational Health and Safety concerns, and union bashing. NEHAWU says the Special Investigating Unit report on Tembisa Hospital highlights chronic failures, and vows to continue fighting for quality healthcare.
# Police say the deadly attack on a synagogue in Manchester, England, has been declared a terrorist incident. Two people were killed and four others wounded yesterday when a man drove a car into pedestrians, then attacked people with a knife outside Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue. The attack happened on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Greater Manchester Police Chief Stephen Watson says the attacker was shot dead by armed forces at the scene:
# Cricket: The Proteas Women start their 50-over World Cup campaign against four-time champion England in Guwahati today. England is currently third in the ODI world rankings, behind defending champion Australia and co-host India, with South Africa in fifth place, followed by New Zealand. The Proteas reached the semifinals in the last two tournaments, as well as the finals of the last two T20 World Cups. Captain Laura Wolvaardt wants her charges to go all the way this time, saying the belief within the squad is very strong.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-26-cents and the euro at 20-rand-24-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-21-cents and Bitcoin trades at 120-thousand-607-dollars.
