# President Ramaphosa reaffirms South Africa’s commitment to black economic empowerment
# And BOSA demands urgent action over the police detective shortage
# The Government of National Unity has adopted a Medium-Term Development Plan. Addressing the National Council of Provinces president Cyril Ramaphosa said the plan’s success depends on collaboration between government, business, labour, and civil society. Ramaphosa explained that social compacts through master plans have already boosted industries like automotive, sugar, and textiles. He emphasised that the National Dialogue has been launched to reignite shared patriotism guided by South Africa’s Constitution:
Meanwhile, Ramaphosa says South Africa remains firmly committed to Black Economic Empowerment, despite the US focusing on other priorities. He said in the council, redress and equity are constitutional imperatives as BEE is vital for inclusive, sustainable growth and must involve all South Africans. He confirmed that policies are being reviewed to expand access to finance and bring historically excluded citizens into the economic mainstream:
# Build One South Africa has demanded an urgent audit of policing capacity after Police minister Senzo Mchunu revealed a shortage of two-thousand-344 detectives nationwide. BOSA leader Mmusi Maimane says this gap is fueling crime, with cases going cold and criminals walking free. The Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal are the worst affected. He is calling for immediate recruitment, better resources, and a public system to track case backlogs and ensure accountability.
# The DA in Johannesburg says parties in council chose positions over principles in voting against a motion of no confidence in mayor Dada Morero. A total of 144 councillors including from the ANC and EFF voted against the motion, while 75 voted in favour and 43 abstentions. The DA’s, Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, says no amount of spin by a failing executive can conceal Johannesburg’s rot and decay, but the residents will not forget:
# Lebanese armed group Hezbollah has hailed what it called its ally Iran’s victory over Israel after 12 days of war, declaring it the start of a “new historical phase”. In a statement, Hezbollah offered its “most sincere congratulations” to the Islamic Republic, praising its “glorious divine victory”. The victory, it said, was “manifested in the precise and painful strikes it launched” against Israel, as well as “the lightning response to the American aggression against its nuclear facilities”.
# Rugby: Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus told flamboyant flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezula he doesn’t have to make magic on the field all the time. The young player will don the number 10 jersey in Saturday’s match against the Barbarians in Cape Town, with the more experienced Manie Libbok on the bench, and veteran Handré Pollard not playing this week. Erasmus says 23-year-old Feinberg-Mngomezula has only played in eight Tests so far and is still learning, and has to bring balance into his game.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-71-cents and the euro at 20-rand-68-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-23-cents and Bitcoin trades at 107-thousand-297-dollar. Gold sells at three-thousand-336-dollars-88-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 66-dollars-29-cents a barrel.
