# Ahmedabad police in India say there is at least one survivor from the London-bound Air India flight that crashed minutes after taking off from Ahmedabad with 242 people on board. The man, who had been in seat 11A, has been identified as Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British national. He told Hindustan Times that the impact injuries he has sustained included bruising on his chest, eyes and feet. Police say there may be a few more survivors in the hospital.
Meanwhile, the South African government has expressed heartfelt condolences to India. The flight, en route to London, crashed into a doctors’ hostel. The cause remains unknown. Department of International Relations and Cooperation’s spokesperson, Chrispin Phiri, says South Africa stands in solidarity with India and all affected nations:
# Cabinet says it has responded swiftly to a new outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, with containment measures now in place. The Department of Agriculture has ordered over 900-thousand vaccine doses, with the first batch expected soon. Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni says affected farms in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal are under quarantine, and livestock movement has been restricted:
# The DA says Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane must declare a provincial state of disaster after devastating floods have killed at least 70 people. Hundreds of families are homeless, and damage to homes, schools, and hospitals is extensive, while 500-thousand residents remain without electricity. The DA’s Vicky Knoetze criticised the slow government response and called for urgent action to speed up relief efforts and get aid to those in need:
# The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions says it will not withdraw charges against Bafana Mahungela, accused of the murder of Delta Park teacher Kirsten Kluyts. The 22-year-old is also charged with kidnapping, robbery, and the attempted rape of Kluyts. The defence argued that there was insufficient evidence, but the State says it is ready for trial. The High Court in Johannesburg has postponed the matter to 13 October. Mahungela remains in custody.
# Cricket: The Proteas’ bowlers dominated the final session on day two of the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord’s in London on Thursday. Pat Cummins took six wickets to help rout South Africa for just 138, as Australia took a lead of 74 in the first innings. In reply, fast bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi picked up three wickets each to leave the Aussies reeling at 144 for eight in their second innings. Australia lead South Africa by 218 runs with two wickets remaining.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-76-cents and the euro at 20-rand-60-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-21-cents and Bitcoin trades at 105-thousand-923-dollar-60-cents. Gold sells at three-thousand-384-dollars-63-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 70-dollars a barrel.
