Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Rise Mzansi criticises Ramaphosa for not firing minister Simelane
# The SABC’s news executive Moshoeshoe Monare resigns
# And rugby: Mpilo Gumede will miss the next three matches after a red card against Connacht
# Rise Mzansi says it will raise the issue of former Justice minister Thembi Simelane’s recent appointment as minister of Human Settlements at tomorrow’s government of national unity clearing house meeting. The party is concerned about her unexplained financial dealings as Polokwane mayor, which harms public trust in the government. Party leader Songezo Zibi believes president Cyril Ramaphosa should have used his executive power to remove her entirely:
# The DA has uncovered major procurement discrepancies in the Department of Correctional Services. According to the party, some correctional facilities spent as much as 7.5-million-rand on a single walk-through metal detector, while other areas purchased the same item for as little as 18-thousand-rand. Other items, such as CCTV cameras and two-way radios, also showed inflated costs. Kabelo Kgobisa-Ngcaba is calling for an investigation into possible financial mismanagement and supports the Auditor-General’s recommendation for stricter procurement processes:
# The SABC has announced the resignation of its Group Executive for News and Current Affairs, Moshoeshoe Monare, effective end of December. Monare, who joined the SABC in 2022, played a key role in leading the division through pivotal projects, including comprehensive 2024 National Election coverage. SABC CEO Nomsa Chabeli praised his dedication to journalistic excellence, noting his leadership elevated the broadcaster’s standards. The SABC lauded Monare’s impartiality and commitment to informing South Africans during critical moments.
# ActionSA says it cannot stand by and allow the gradual foreign take-over of spaza shops in townships and rural areas to continue. Yesterday, the party marched in Soweto, calling for all spaza shops to be reserved only for South Africans. This comes as over 20 children have died in Gauteng due to suspected food poisoning linked to spaza shops. ActionSA leader, Herman Mashaba, says it is not opposed to foreign businesses in the townships as long as they operate legally:
# Six opposition parties in South Korea have submitted a Bill calling for president Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment over his failed attempt to impose martial law. The country’s main opposition the Democratic Party says the president’s martial law declaration was a clear violation of the constitution. It wants to charge Yoon with crimes of rebellion. Meanwhile, South Korea’s largest labour group, the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, has vowed to go on indefinite strike until the president steps down. Parliament will have to vote on whether to impeach Yoon by Saturday.
# Rugby: Bulls loose forward Mpilo Gumede will miss the team’s next three matches after his red card in the United Rugby Championship match against Connacht. He was sent off for eye-gouging halfway through the second half. Gumede pleaded guilty before a disciplinary hearing, and won’t be available for his team’s next two Champions Cup games against Saracens and Northampton Saints, and the URC derby against the Sharks. Connacht flanker Sean Jansen was given a six-week suspension for his earlier red card in the same match.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-16-cents and the euro at 19-rand-1-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-8-cents and Bitcoin trades at 99-thousand-55-dollar-74-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-651-dollars-45-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 72-dollars-43-cents a barrel.
