# One of the accused in the Mark Lifman murder is a former police task force member
# And Donald Trump says he is confident he will win
# Public Works and Infrastructure minister Dean Macpherson says the Expanded Public Works Programme is integral to South Africa’s efforts to combat poverty and unemployment. The minister addressed the first meeting of the Minister and MECs of Public Works and Infrastructure across all nine provinces in Cape Town on Tuesday. Macpherson says he aims to expand the EPWP’s reach and impact, enabling it to contribute to broader economic stability and growth. He adds that citizens have waited long enough for jobs and service delivery.
# ActionSA urges president Cyril Ramaphosa to declare a state of emergency following multiple child fatalities linked to contaminated goods from foreign-owned spaza shops. They warn that this public health crisis is worsening, demanding increased raids on spaza shops and their distribution networks, to combat the sale of unsafe or expired products. ActionSA’s Lerato Ngobeni believes stronger government action is essential to protect public health and prevent further loss of life:
Meanwhile, NotInMyName International has also called for a state of emergency. It says it is biological warfare against citizens. They encourage citizens, especially in townships, to assist foreign spaza shop owners in leaving their communities to protect public health and revive the local economy. The movement’s secretary-general Themba Masango offered condolences to the affected families and called for immediate action on food safety regulations.
# Police have confirmed that one of the men linked to the killing of underworld kingpin Mark Lifman was a member of the police’s special task force. Johannes Hendrick Jacobs and Gert Johannes Bezuidenhout appeared briefly at the George Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, facing charges of premeditated murder. Fifty-seven-year-old Lifman was gunned down at the Garden Route Mall on Sunday. Western Cape Police Commissioner, Thembisile Patekile, says they could not rule out more arrests as the investigation continues:
# Former US president and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and his wife Melania voted in Palm Beach, Florida. Trump, the vice president, and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris each need at least 270 electoral votes to win the presidency. The battleground states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin are expected to be pivotal to the path to victory. Trump told reporters that he is confident that he will win:
# Rugby: England lock Jonny Hill will miss Sale Sharks’ next three Premiership matches after being given a ten-week ban following an altercation with a spectator. Four weeks of the ban had been suspended. Hill physically abused the spectator after a match against Bath in June. An independent disciplinary panel accepted his guilty plea and deviated from the appropriate starting point of a 20-week suspension due to exceptional circumstances and substantial mitigation. Hill played 13 Tests for England since 2020 and represented Sale 21 times since 2022.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-38-cents and the euro at 18-rand-98-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-61-cents and Bitcoin trades at 69-thousand-715-dollar-60-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-743-dollars-48-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 75-dollars-51-cents a barrel.
