# The DA says former Finance minister and Reserve Bank governor, Tito Mboweni’s legacy in South African politics is long and significant. He died on Saturday night at the age of 65 after a short illness. The DA’s national spokesperson, Karabo Khakhau, says Mboweni’s passing is a profound loss for the country, and his contributions to strengthening democracy and improving the lives of all citizens will not be forgotten:
Meanwhile, the ANC Youth League has expressed sadness at the passing of Mboweni, saying he was a leader and a visionary. The league’s secretary-general, Mntuwoxolo Ngudle, says Mboweni’s remarkable journey, marked by selflessness and dedication, inspires young people in the ongoing struggle for economic freedom and justice.
# Hawks head Godfrey Lebeya says the law enforcement agency has made significant inroads in apprehending individuals involved in high-profile cases, thus ensuring accountability and justice for the victims. Lebeya was updating the nation on the progress of high-profile cases and successes achieved. He says these arrests targeted people involved in serious corruption, organised crime, and commercial crime including fraud, and theft. He says a total number of 818 suspects, 800 natural persons, and 18 juristic persons were secured before the various courts:
# Gauteng police have launched an investigation into the death of seven people including five family members in Orange Farm yesterday. A three-year-old boy is among the deceased. The family was celebrating lobola negotiations when the attack took place. Police spokesperson, Brenda Muridili, says four individuals survived the attack with two of the survivors, a 31-year-old and a one-year-old boy, sustaining injuries. She adds that the suspect shot himself and died on arrival in hospital:
# The United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon say the Israel Defence Forces breached one of its positions in southern Lebanon, in violation of international law. Two Israeli tanks destroyed the main gate of a UN Interim Force south of the country. In the past few days, five UN peacekeepers have been injured. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told the UN to get its peacekeepers out of Lebanon, warning they are in harm’s way. The UN has requested an explanation from the Israeli military over what it called shocking violations.
# Rugby: The Lions defeated the Dragons 23-19 at Rodney Parade, South Wales, on Sunday to make it three wins from three in the United Rugby Championship. The Lions scored two tries through Quan Horn and Jarod Cairns which Evan Lloyd converted and three penalties. Meanwhile, on Saturday, the Bulls kept up their unbeaten run in this year’s championship with a 29-19 win over the Ospreys, while the Sharks and Stormers suffered defeats in their respective matches.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-45-cents and the euro at 19-rand-7-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-79-cents and Bitcoin trades at 62-thousand-700-dollar-86-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-649-dollars-48-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 77-dollars-67-cents a barrel.
